What do you like most about your home?

I was just talking to this lovely nurse and was explaining that going outside makes me anxious because of the people and unfamiliar surroundings and she asked me what I like most about my home and what makes it safe for me. And I thought that would be interesting to ask here as well, if you're comfortable to say of course :)

I like a lot of things about my home. All my favourite possessions are there. It's peaceful and I know I'm always comfortable and happy there. And probably the best thing is it's in the countryside.

Not a lot I know but they are big things for me.

  • I love my home because it is my safe place, as soon as I see the sign for my village when we are driving home I start to feel warm inside cos I know I am nearly safe

I love that all my books and magazines are here. I love that it is cosy and safe. I love having my TV so I can watch all the sitcoms that  I watch over and over to keep me comforted

I love my bed. At the end of the day I know I can get under the warm blankets, cuddle up while my wife sleeps and watch one of my favourite sitcoms or read a book till I fall asleep

I love the birdfeeder on the balcony where I can watch all the birds eat their food

Most of all I love having my wife here, she looks after me and keeps me safe in a way I never imagined another human being would be able to and my little boy who is just the lovliest thing that has happened to me

  • I love this description, makes so much sense to me

  • This is the view from my living room window.

  • I always like that idea of ‘A Cabinet of Curiosities’ - a home can sometimes be like that.

  • That sounds so nice!

  • We sometimes have a fire in the garden which is really lovely  - but it’s my dream to one day have a house with an open fire, and to have those big old fashioned comfy arm chairs by the fire so that we can sit and read by the fire in the evenings. I always think it’s amazing that old houses even had fireplaces in the bedrooms - imagine how nice that would be - to drift off to sleep to the sound of the fire quietly crackling and the flicker of the flames. So peaceful.

  • Those salt lamps are lovely - they create a beautiful warm glow don’t they? I like using essential oils in a burner too - I like lavender, bergamot, orange and frankincense essential oils.

  • That’s a great quote :)

  • Home can be a little place of all the things precious to you. A place built purely for you and that represents your interests. A museum cabinet of memories, preferences and security.

For me my home is all of these things, but it also a place where I get to explore the art of efficiency. I have routines and rituals that I can complete in a certain way at home, that I can’t in other places, just for the very fact that I have designed my space around these requirements. It’s quite a wonderful, but also very unique, place as a result of this personalisation.

  • Me too their honking is so cute and their little waddle. I don't like visitos either I like my own privat safe place. It's where I'm happiest. Do you find that?

    1. That reminds me of my childhood. We had an open fire. I used like putting coloured sweet wrappers on it to see the blue flames. Also I looked forward to Sundays as we had a toasting fork and cooked toast over the fire.
  • My neighbour has a real fire; I now head to hers to burn my confidential waste.

  • Well said. Your bungalow sounds lovely place to live. I only walk when it's quiet as well :)

  • Wow Kate that sounds absolutely amazing. You describe it so well your English and writing is super.

  • Distant sounds can be so soothing. I love the sound of a Curlew’s call. Any bird song is just wonderful. And the crackling sound of a real fire - I love that.

  • Love the idea of hearing the genteel sounds of cricket at a distance. The ripple of applause, willow on leather…

  • Jealous of your owls Kate! I should be grateful for the occasional robin though, which always feels special. I had a pheasant in my garden the other day for quite a while. A female one. Liked my overgrown grass I think

  • Same with the lighting. A soft up glow from my Himalayan salt lamp is enough for me most evenings. I must get some proper candles too. I just have tee lights for oil infusion purposes

  • When you find somewhere that just feels right it’s wonderful isn’t it? I’m glad you’ve found somewhere that you love :)

  • It is! I live in a big town but just near the cricket ground. I have lived here for just 2 years but hope I’m here forever!
