What drinks do you drink?

My drink diet is so unhealthy.

I don't drink alcohol– I don’t like the taste –but regular drinks for me are coca cola like between 6-8 cans a day and that's causing my digestion to go through regular hell. I do drink milkshakes sometimes and squash but I'm not a huge fan of the taste, so back to the cola I go.

I've tried tea and coffee as well but I don't like either. I used to drink fruit shoots a lot but that was when I was little. Since I was in my teens I have drank mostly coca cola, occasionally I'll have a hot chocolate but not often.

My drinking has always been a bit like this. Flip side of the coin is I don't drink enough of anything and end up dehydrated, normally during summer though.

What about you guys?

What do you like drinking?

If you'd prefer to move away from cola, you might like to consider something like Waterdrop's products. I have one of their pretty, 1-litre, glass bottles, which I still enjoy using every day. And I use their free app to track all of my fluid intake (including green tea and decaf coffee) against a personalised daily target. Since I started using their products, I've hit my daily target 382 times :)

I use their LUCY smart cap that syncs my bottle-based drinking to the app, but this isn't in stock at the moment (I think it's about to be replaced with a newer version). I add my other drinks manually in the app.

There are also various all-in-one smart bottles available online. I ruled these out for various reasons, but you might prefer that kind of setup instead.

The app has an optional setting for automatically increasing your hydration target on hot days, which could help with this.

I do drink milkshakes sometimes and squash but I'm not a huge fan of the taste, so back to the cola I go.

Waterdrop offers various capsule-based flavours, which can be dropped into the bottle with water - including a cola flavour that you might like to try :)  My favourite is pomegranate, which I buy when it's on offer.

They're much less strongly flavoured than squash, which I don't like either. Using one capsule per litre, I'd say the pomegranate is sweet, delicately flavoured, and refreshing. I've also used a very small splash of strawberry Ribena as a cheaper alternative.

Sorry if this reads like an advertorial. It's just an enthusiastic personal recommendation based on a good length of experience! :)

  • Red wine, especially Chilean Merlot, Coffee (try to limit to no more than one cup), and then Yorkshire tea....I do like Dandelion & Burdock too

  • All at the same time?

  • I love herbal or fruit teas. Apparently the correct word is "tisane" being French for any "tea" that doesn't have actual tea-plant in it. I also like the 0% or 0.5% low alcohol ciders, kombucha, soda water with lemon/lime juice, tap water, fizzy water, low sugar ginger beer or red wine. I don't like very sweet or sugary drinks as I hate the sugar-film that forms on your teeth. Drinking full sugar pop/soda means I have to brush my teeth really really frequently.

  • My nephew used to drink only water when he was a child. He has continued to drink water but very occasionally would add a cup of tea, perhaps due to social pressure.

  • Water, espresso coffee, black tea, red and white wine. Occasionally I would have a Diet Coke.

  • Tea, coffee, water, red wine, gin.

  • Generally tea or water for me, although I start my day with an espresso.

My real problem is remembering to drink. I often realise in late afternoon that I haven’t had anything to drink at all.

  • I have extremely restricted drinking. I drink water (cold and hot) and mint tea and that's it.

It is easier to do so in adulthood than as a child, but there are still people who think I'm lying and that if they keep listing drinks they'll find the secret other drink that I like.

  • I drink pretty much to a schedule: so 5 cups of tea and 1 coffee a day.  Plus I drink 2-3 pints of filtered water (I find tap water has a smell and filtered water out the fridge - doesn't twitch my "dog nose") .  Alcohol was 2-3 bottles of red a week now 1-2 bottles and possibly looking to reduce, my smart watch seems to say my sleep especially heart rate is better on nights I don't drink alcohol.  I don't do soft drinks other than an occasional (Ribena).

  • I have a 2.2 L water bottle, I mainly drink that,

But most of the time, I like to drink milk, Fanta Orange/Lemon. oasis and during the winter I like to drink hot chocolate

  • Hi

I drink water as much as I can and also have water with Vidrate hydration electrolytes which taste nice (other hydration supplements are available)

I don’t drink much alcohol as it makes me really poorly and it really affects my senses.

You could try buying sparkling water in 500ml bottles (so it doesn’t lose its fizz too quickly) and adding either squash or the supplements mentioned above. Or you could get an Air Up drinking bottle with some cola flavour scent pouches that way you drink water and get the aroma of coke.

Hope I given you some options

  • Thanks! That looks quite interesting, I’ll look into it.

  • the best thing to do is just try to drink as much squash as possible and only have 1 or 2 cans a day

  • I have the same thing with caffeine making me tired. I discovered it when trying pre-workout drinks before the gym, and they just made me super tired so I've only tried caffeine on a few occasions.

From what research I could find, the topic isn't well-studied. However, it seems to be that it isn't necessarily autism itself that means caffeine has a different impact on us, but rather that it comes down to the neurological differences that may come alongside autism e.g. variations in brain structure.

Here are a few studies on the dopamine and serotonin systems and how they can be affected by ASD, if you are really interested: Frontiers | Dopamine in Autism Spectrum Disorders—Focus on D2/D3 Partial Agonists and Their Possible Use in Treatment

  • I mostly drink water (we have very tasty tap water here) and tea (hot and cold). Rarely a coffee, because I don’t really like the taste of black coffee so I have to add a lot of milk and also because I can’t really handle caffeine as good. It makes me tired for some weird reason (does anybody know something about that?). Black tea is fine though, the teaine (I know it’s actually just caffeine) comes in lower concentration and has less caffeinating abilities because of that so it doesn’t leave me crashed. But I still do not drink enough.

My sister uses some sugar-free syrups. Maybe it’s worth a try for you? That amount of carbonic and citric acid can really mess with the gastric mucosa.

  • Sachets of coffee, iced coffee, milkshake, flavoured water, fruit juice

  • When I was younger (any age under 19 really) I hated water so I'd have a glass or two of lemonade/coke/etc daily. to keep me hydrated.

Now, I love water and I'd say I drink 2-4 litres a day. I'll have maybe one drink of coke/pepsi/etc. with my evening meal or if I go out for lunch, but that's it. I avoid all alcohol. In general, I am much healthier so I am conscious about what I drink (I'd like to think it makes up partially for my poor diet) and I also exercise frequently.

  • When I was a teenager I used to drink an entire two litre bottle of 17p Tesco Everyday Value diet cola in a single sitting - awful stuff. Recently I have started cutting down on caffeine to manage my anxiety levels - I only have a cup of green tea every morning, occasionally black tea instead, and anything more than that seems to make me really jittery and agitated. I'm not sure if I would survive two litres of cola if I had it now.

As for alcohol: I used to avoid it completely as I didn't like the idea of being intoxicated and losing my sense of composure, but I have since learnt to enjoy the sensation in moderation. However, no matter how much or little I seem to drink, I always feel really rotten and lethargic the day after. I usually drink cider or wine, but definitely not beer. I'm usually content with having one or two drinks in an evening, and most of the time I only drink with other people, so I'll go without drinking most days.

I've recently developed a taste for sparkling water since I stopped drinking cola. I don't like drinking tap water all that much so it's a good way to stay hydrated, plus the fact that it's sparkling makes it feel more justified to buy a bottle of than still water.

  • black coffee, Earl Grey lose leaf tea and English Breakfast lose leaf tea. I also drink mixed fruit squash and a isotonic as I cycle a lot. Protein drinks as well.
