What are you passionate about?

It's very common for Autistic people to be very knowledgable in a particular field or about a very specific thing. So what I wanna know is what that is for people!

For me? It's Star Trek. I freaking love Star Trek. I live and breathe it. I went to a convention this year and it was awesome! I get so excited about it and just love watching it. Whenever I feel low? Watch Star Trek. Whenever I feel great? Watch Star Trek. Whenever I feel whenever? You can bet it's Star Trek time! I like playing a game where whenever I watch something else, I like to see if there's any actor who has ever been in Star Trek. You'd be surprised! I don't know too many people who also like it, so I just talk about it whenever and wherever. Sometimes I like to intentionally ramble on about it because I know it makes people roll their eyes. But sometimes people know how much I like it so they let me go on and on! I like those people!

I'm also pretty knowledgeable about films and TV in general. Even ones I haven't seen. I just seem to absorb trivial knowledge.

So time for you to geek out about your passions! :D

  • But what right do people have to put other people's information online?    I would feel violated.     I don't have FB or any other social media either.

The CIA have admitted having access to these databases - and when any person within the whole family tree does the DNA as well, you could be opening yourself up to all sorts of fun.

  • Wow, 10 per week! I love reading but I can only read in bed and I fall asleep within a short time so perhaps one book per week. I have not read many books more than once, in fact I can only think of a couple. However I can read books about the same subject (say a person's biography) by many different authors.

  • I LOVE the website. It's not really detailed personal data though. Name, DOB, and marriage / children, would possibly be available but if you are living, which I presume you are :), then you would just show up as a silhouette of a male or female, with no other info - no name, nothing.

However when people share their trees with other members ALL living people on the trees are available to be seen, but only by those people sharing the trees ie not the rest of the population who use the website, if that makes sense.

In my opinion there's plenty more info about us out there on Facebook and other social media sites. Given that I have two very large trees you might even be on mine Plastic, however I have only shared my tree with a couple of cousins so she would be the only person to see your name.

  • What I like about Ancestry is that you can pay month by month. Last month we didn't renew as we needed the £20 that month but I am now back online :) . We met American relatives of my husband a couple of years ago when they came to Scotland. We became aware of them through Ancestry. At that point I hadn't gone that far back with my husband's family tree so they were delighted to find later that they were descended from royalty. My family is fairly mundane, tin miners, generations of mole catchers! (a friend bought be a lovely book written by an ex-mole catcher and his life working in the countryside), upholsterers, French polishers, shoe makers - I like to find out what those jobs entailed years ago.

  • I remember Elliot Smith's album from 2000, though I never got the chance to listen ot it, shame.

I know that he passed away a few years back. Isn't he from Portland? I know that the Dandy Warhols and the Shins are from there.

  • I don't bother with TV, anymore. The internet and music keep me occupied. Plus, I have a few close friends that I phone every day.

Plus, I visit my neighbour occasionally for dinner.

  • Doesn't stop anyone putting someone else's information on line.

  • My trees are all set to private, plus living relatives are locked unless someone personally shares the tree with you.

  • I don't really like these ancestry websites - I'm really uncomfortable with the idea of some random member of my extended family choosing to put all MY detailed personal data on the internet.

  • Well said .

Our ability to mask emotions and adapt and compromise is unquestionable .

  • I just read books fiction or fact I can read up to 10 books a week sometimes more , I find solace and comfort in books Iv read my child hood favourite Treasure Island 574 times  just coz I’m safe with my enjoying what I’m reading , it’s a comfort zone I guess .

  • u should work for translink :)   why dont you have a TV ! do u need help getting one ?

  • Most of my obsessions are music based or comedy based. I don't have any that I'm continually obsessed with, they come in waves and sometimes make lots of return appearances.

Elliott Smith is probably my longest running obsession.

I'm currently into Post Malone. Compared to Elliott there is an insane amount of information out there - so many photos and videos - which makes it more intense I think, but also constantly new photos and videos. I like knowing everything about a subject and "completing" it in the sense of watching all videos etc. I particularly like Mr Post because he has a few autistic qualities: honesty, treats all people the same, has intense interests. It's been interesting trying to work out why he's so popular and I think good social communication is the factor I very much lack.

  • I love family history too! My father in law was given a 6 month ancestry subscription which he let me use, and I got so obsessed with it. My family is all working class so nothing very exciting, and they all lived in the middle section of England going back to the 1500s, which explains why I'm so pasty skinned. :)

I did a tree for an American friend and he was related to British royalty - so fascinating.

I particularly love old newspaper stories about small town matters, old letters, war documents etc.

I can't really afford a subscription right now so research takes longer (I can use the library too) but it's the act of researching that I love. It doesn't need to be my family either. When I worked at the library I would do research for customers!

  •  I applied for Mastermind - with The Simpsons as my specialised subject - however, the audition questions on the phone completely bowled me over.

It's like how Thomas Edison said that he never failed, but found thousands of ideas that didn't work.

  • How come you didn't end up on it? That'd be a fun category to do! :)

  • My 'passions' come and go in the sense that some days I'm actually disgusted by everything I love but I think that's when Depression is creeping up into the worst of it's phases. During which time I'm less passionate than an inanimate object!

In between those Depressive storms though I'm passionate about Birds, Dinosaurs. Especially Jays! Because Jays are the bestest birds! In fact, even during my worse weeks in Depression, I don't think I quite manage to become disgusted by Jays.

I spend much of time looking out for birds, especially for, you guessed it, Jays! I even have a set up in the garden where I can feed them relatively close to my window so that I can practice my Bird Photography on the. The only problem is, I'm so obsessed with Jays that no photo ever quite is perfect enough and so I end up just with files and files of photos of Jays. Which isn't really bad, but some of them are repeating on themselves by this point.

When they weren't appearing in the garden for a month or so when I can only guess there was abundance of some other food sauce for them I was disappointed not to see them.

I play a game of pretending I'm a Jurassic park ranger (Because Jurassic park is one of the best films and books, and it's about dinosaurs and birds are dinosaurs...). I call myself the Jurassic park ranger of my local patch. I keep up with all the goings-on of the local Avian-Dinosaurs, photographing them, noting if there is an influx of a certain species or a sudden disappearance of one. Listening out for owls in the night. Checking there are no diseases spreading locally. Cleaning all feeders to try and ensure diseases aren't spread on any of my feeders. Trying to recognise individual birds. Which is hard especially for Robins, Jays, Blue ***, Great *** etc because they don't have any really noticeable differences between the genders either.

I currently have three Jays that hang around almost daily coming round for my peanuts, competing with squirrels for them and the occasional magpie.

  • Genealogy. My family tree has 15,000 people on it. I also research my husband's which has a similar number. I have traced his line back to the 1100s. He is directly descended from many kings and queens, as far back as Robert the Bruce. Thankfully his ancestors had regularly updated their family tree with a 300 page document!

I just love to sit and browse through the website, sometimes just picking someone at random and researching their life. Sometimes I just like to 'tidy up' the info I have online especially if copiedJoy from someone else and it lacks commas, full stops or capital letters. Joy I find I can lose myself for hours.

  • I'm passionate about music and sport - but participate in neither. My all-time favourite band are Joy Division. My favourite football teams are Arsenal and Brentford.

I used to watch The Simpsons religiously. Now, I no longer have a TV. (not even streaming - my internet is too slow anyway)

I saw Joker back in October. One twisted individual. Slight smile

I find it too challenging to read due to my anxiety. However, I am interested in books about music. I read Mike Skinner's autobiography.

I have a savant knowledge of bus and rail timetables in Northern Ireland. As well as the collection times for post in various Post Offices.

  • I'm a Pan-Nerdist.    I get off on all tech from cars to planes to trains to models to electronics to films & tv etc..  (I'm a Trekker too).    I'm happy to indulge in anything as long as it fires my brain up.  Smiley
