Best concert

Who have you seen live and who would you like to see?

  • The first link brings you right back to this discussion. However, there's a second link that has sneakily been added at the end of that first link.

  • I rarely went to Gigs, but enjoyed seeing Embrace at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin; back in 2000.

  • This is weird. Thought at first someone else had been to that gig but those are my words exactly aren’t they?

    Almost.

    Yours:

The Radiophonic Worksop at the MAC, Belfast. 2016/7 I think. These were the guys who worked on the basement of the BBC for years on inventive music and soundscapes for all sorts of shows. In their retirement they said ‘shall we form a band and play some of those live?’ Hands down the best live music experience I’ve ever had.

    Theirs:

The Radiophonic Worksop in Belfast, at the MAC. 2016/7 I feel. These were the same guys who spent years creating innovative music and soundscapes for a variety of shows in the BBC basement. They asked, "Shall we form a band and play some of those live?" after they retired. The very best live music experience I've ever had,

I wonder where the link attached takes you?

I used to be on a photographers' forum and this would happen there - ie old posts being copied by a new 'member'.

If it includes a link to something afterwards (as this does) I understand it as spam.

However, there are often meaningless posts on here and if it's a bot, I don't understand what its purpose is?

  • As you may have guessed, I was very much into the Madchester / Indie scene, which then (if I remember rightly) seemed to evolve into Britpop when the likes of Oasis and Blur came along.

  • I've seen Adele live and she was amazing! Better than I thought she would be actually. She sang Someone Like You and everyone joined in the chorus it was so cool.

I'd love to see Elton John live one day but my anxiety and health are both at bad ends currently so not sure that will be possible.

  • The concert I opted for featured the likes of The Happy Mondays, James (absolutely brilliant), The Farm, and a group called Northside. There were one or two other groups, but I can no longer remember who.

That one sounds so good. Love all of those bands. I saw The Farm in Glasgow in the early nineties when Madchester was a thing.

  • I would go and see everyone (most people) if I could afford it but I’ve seen Nickelback about 7 times, first 3 times they had fireworks and it was great, other times they were not there best, they were ok but prefer their old stuff - I don’t know why there’s a lot of hatred for them, they’re a controversial band but I guess it’s all about what you like so there you go.

Seen Foo Fighters a few times, first time was with Dave Grohl and his broken Leg which was different to see him playing in his Throne and then the next couple of times they were good - they cancelled the first time as he broke his Leg and then I had tickets to see them again this year, then Taylor Hawkins died so was a bit put off going for them or Nickelback again!

Saw Chris Cornell at The Royal Albert Hall and he was really good, would’ve liked to have seen him with Soundgarden and Audioslave as well!

Saw Pearl Jam a few times and they were good, first time at Milton Keynes Bowl was really good as they played for 3 and a half hours so was well worth it! Wouldn’t mind seeing Eddie Vedder on his own as well.

Saw Metallica once and they were brilliant, would go and see them again and saw Korn at Wembley 6 years ago and they were a real treat, was lucky enough to meet Brian ‘Head’ Welch and he even messaged me on Instagram a while after as well - they were brilliant!

Seen a couple of Pink Floyd tributes as well and wouldn’t mind seeing the real thing, would’ve loved to have seen George Michael/Wham so seen quite a few tributes to George Michael, Andrew Browning and Rob Lamberti were very good - have seen a tribute to Pink, Vicky Jackson as well and she was very good so wouldn’t mind seeing them again, would go and see Pink herself as well - would’ve liked to have seen Vicky Jackson as Jessie J, she’s done quite a few people and wouldn’t mind seeing her on her own as well!

Saw Boy George and Culture Club last year and they were really good as well.

These are who I would like to see in particular (to name a few) -

    Depeche Mode

    Lewis Capaldi

    Pink

    Jessie J

    Sia

    Adele

    Fleetwood Mac

Would go and see Guns N’ Roses if Axl Rose weren’t such a diva and turned up late to his gigs!

Haven’t seen anyone big this year but would like to make up for it next year hopefully.

  • I'm not sure that it counts as a concert in the way that you probably mean. When I was in my mid-teens, I had entered a Radio 1 competition, and much to my surprise I won. The prize was 2 tickets to watch a Brit Awards concert at Wembley Arena, which I ended up going to with my mother. There were three concerts over the course of three days, all featuring different musical artists/groups. When I submitted my competition entry, I had to state my choice of concert, which proved to be a tough decision to make.

The concert I opted for featured the likes of The Happy Mondays, James (absolutely brilliant), The Farm, and a group called Northside. There were one or two other groups, but I can no longer remember who.

About a year or so later, there had been a free outdoor concert to celebrate Radio 1's 25th Anniversary. I got to see Status Quo perform, which had been my sole reason for wanting to go. They did not disappoint.

For my 40th birthday, I was treated to seeing André Rieu & The Johann Strauss Orchestra... Fantastic!

I would love to have seen Queen (in the Freddie Mercury days), David Bowie, and Elton John.

  • Lovely song that, never knew that’s who sang it

  • The first live performance I saw was in 1973, we were on holiday at Pontins, Pakefield. Peters and Lee had just had a number one with ‘Welcome home,’ unfortunately they had  already signed for the whole season as a cabaret act. Pontins thought all their birthdays had come at once.

  • Just remembered another one from when I was a kid: Phil Coulter (pianist) at the Grand Opera House Belfast

  • Who have yours been if it’s ok to ask?

  • Not been to many music concerts as I never felt cool enough to fit in.

But there have been a handful : Paul Simon (with my parents) when I was still a kid - around 1991

The Divine  Comedy (backed by the Ulster Orchestra in Nov 1994 - Neil Hannon’s birthday if I recall correctly)

The Radiophonic Worksop at the MAC, Belfast. 2016/7 I think. These were the guys who worked on the basement of the BBC for years on inventive music and soundscapes for all sorts of shows. Mercury Rev in… Bangor I think? Around 2017 or 2018. Not a band I had/have any interest in but my brother’s plus one dropped out that night and i was free. The venue was an old Methodist church which somehow created incredibly good accoustics. Smallish crowd. They played a whole album and the whole thing was beautiful and mesmerising even though I knew I wouldn’t be hunting down the tracks afterwards. Very much a ‘this moment, now’ kind of special. They had a fab support act - female soloist- too who annoyingly I can’t recall the name of as I’d be more inclined to listen to her tracks again than theirs. Something more unique and melancholy to her I think. And buying a track or two would have given her some support. EDIT: Lyla Foy that was her name, I found it. Must look up those tracks again, see if she’s had some deserved success.

  • I was given a free last minute ticket one night and saw Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Chuck Berry.
