Wanted: Aspies aged 17 or there abouts (18-22). Anybody out there?

Hiya,

I'm Katie and I've been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome aged 17.

I've been bouncing around the forum a while and so far I've only found adults, but I'd really like to find other Aspie's my age to talk to, you know, usual stuff, hobbies, how strange normal people are, and preferably if you've gone to uni/started uni I'd love it if you could let me know how you got on and what to expect.

Cheers.

  • congratulations on the university offer, thats great you must be over the moon

  • Congrats on the uni offer kalajaro. Thats great news.

  • Oops, sorry ThinkabilitySUSU, see you've already addressed the PM questions - thanks for that :)

    There are no PMs here!

I'm a 19yo student, I'm not on the spectrum myself but having had several friends who were, I can identify with it completely! I'm the students with disabilities officer for a students' union with 26,000 members.

You're all welcome to let me know if you've got any specific questions!

Hiya, yeah right now a Community is a very new thing for the NAS and there is concern about privacy and safety for anyone who might be using the forum.

So, for that reason, right now we don't allow the sharing of personal details or private messages. That's likely to be a decision that we'll continually review but sorry, it is the way it is right now during the early days of the Community.

  • Wow, people. XD

Hey! Nice to see you joining the convo!

Cheers for the support Hagrid, managed to get a conditional offer from the Uni a day after the interview, meaning I only need to get 220 tariff points (Easy ;D) to get enrolled.

Hi Blimey, whats a PM? And its nice to see a uni student here, do you live on campus or at home? Hows uni life? Funny how school loads you up with so much info that doesn't acutally help. xD

ThinkabilitySuSu theres a union that looks out for us? Any info would be great! All I've essentially been told is about my course, that theres dyslexia support that can be adapeted to help me and that I shouldn't be afraid of fees, no ones mention unions.

Its great to see people taking an interest, thanks again all for posting!

  • hi, im christopher, an 18 year old aspergers diagnoisee in the west country. if you ever need someone to talk to, you've come to the right place.

It's a big one in the south of England. I don't think that really matters though to be honest! Similar to not posting contact info or being able to PM, this site is more about what you've got to say than who you are!

If I answer that, that will immediately let you identify me and contact me privately away from here. If you've got a good reason to ask, by all means say so!

Ah sorry! I was thinking this was like a normal forum (where you can contact users and everything)! Was wondering why there was no PM option or anything!

I was asking because my university (which is a really large university) doesnt have a disabilities union or anything like that!

Heya, I'm 18. First year university student in London. I was in the exact same position as you are this time last year! (personal statement stressing an' all!)

P.s how does one PM here?..

  • Good luck i hope everything goes well for you

  • Ok, got a Uni interview tomorrow, got my portfolio ready, my bag packed...

Will let you know how it goes. Also, I've asked my school and they're going to try and walk me through the student finances and such, so with any luck I can let you know about that too.

  • Thats where i'm lucky.  ive known that i wanted to be involved with films since i was much younger, i just wasn't sure wht.  thats why i took a course which deals with a small bit of everything so i could make an informed decision and find what i really enjoyed.  hopefully i will obtain my HND at Ayr college which because it works so closely with the UWS which is right next door you get an instant acceptance.  maybe there is something like that near you

  • Like I said, its just a fall back plan in case something goes wrong. :)

With all the increases in Uni prices the universities might have to become more strict with who they let in, meaning that even if I do get all of the grades I might not get a place. So, if I don't get into the uni I want, I have my gap year plan in place so I won't panic or get too anxious whenever it gets brought up. ^^

As long as you enjoy your subject then thats great. Its important to choose what you love to do and not because other people say you should, otherwise you might end up hating your time at uni. :S

  • That cool, i hope it works out for you.  I had a one on one meeting with my lecturer yesterday and he was saying that he thought i would be a good video and film editor so thats what im gonna aim forbut it probably wont hurt to plan out a gap year

  • No. I'm more into art so I've only ever done comissions (paintings, sculptures etc) for family members or friends of family. For work experience I hung out with a friend of my mum who was a criminal psychologist (basically gets into the minds of criminals and diagnoses them etc. She scared me half to death by going from 'normal' to 'criminal in interrogation' without warning.)

Thats why its my gap year plan, never done it before and it'll give me a chance to find out what I wouldn't mind doing part time work for when I'm at uni full time.

  • O thanks tht makes a lot off sense now.  i suppose it would be interesting to see how i cope but hopefully i won't need it.  so far my only work experience was a week in the library hanks to the school.  have you worked much Before

  • Nah. I couldn't do nothing for that long. My 'plan b' (as I call it) is to try and get a part time job for the year to see how I cope in a working environment, so I can learn more about how 'adults' expect me to behave or react. If I can handle it, I might go full time for that year. That way I can use the money to help support my mum and even put some aside to help with uni. :)

It'll also give me time to work on my artwork for a portfolio!

  • thanks for the tip, what have you planned for your gap year because i really have no idea.  when you say gp year i think of a year not doing anything, is that what you meant
