Moving house

Moving house on Tuesday and although im delighted to be moving into a better living situation (cost is a worry)

this is the second time in a year and a half. I have absolutely no support as have no friends or family. I’m totally overwhelmed and having meltdowns galore. any advice as I’m struggling big time.

  • Food shop next on the list as haven’t eaten properly for a few days.

You need to do so! But things are looking up, yes? HA's can be variable. Mine is sometimes ok and other times pants.

  • You should be able to make a claim with your removal firm for the damage to the chair. You can cost it as how much you have to pay someone to put the chair outside and the council's fee for removing it. When I moved, it felt like all the problems were catastrophes, but I got through it, in the end. I was stressed out for a long while, but the place was worth it. Of course, the main problem is forking the money out in the first place, in order to reclaim it. But at least you check the firm is insured and will accept your claim before you pay anything.

  • I’m starting to realise there are good people out there. I really appreciate hearing your comforting comments. I’ve become quiet isolated for lots of reasons.

great News I have board band and can now watch the telly. I also had Mary Ann hospice take everything I wanted to go. So I now have room to swing a cat.
I need to strip the flooring of my old maisonette which was infested with booklice due to the extremely high levels of humidity and the outside wall retaining water. Fighting with the housing association since I moved in a year and a half ago. I don’t feel I should remove it as they have cost me close to a thousand in damages to my things. The MP and ombudsman are looking into it.
there’s no carpet here but I will look into laying my own vinyl as the concrete is putting dust everywhere. Just need to see how I’m fixed after my last rent payment for my old place. Food shop next on the list as haven’t eaten properly for a few days.

  • I’m poor but still love this place as it’s a godsend having a garden

Focus on this thought,  ! You sound as if you've done well overall. There will always be upsets when moving, but from my experience this fades as you, 'settle in'.

Not all firms are good at keeping rules; try a different one next time - save for a more expensive firm! I didn't know I was autistic for many moves but for my next I would tell them I was autistic and my major need is for boxes to be put in the right rooms - even pay a little extra to get this done. Labelling is always advisable - you know what's in the boxes and can sort them out over a few days or weeks. I would slowly move boxes to the right rooms first, then open them one by one - that way, you remain in control.

Keep writing if you feel stressed and share successes (others find them useful even if they don't respond). Sharing is one of many good things about this chat site. We have different experiences so you can usually find solutions- and it feels good to offer experiences to others.

  • I labelled everything and which room but the movers didn’t stick to it. As I was in the garden calming my reactive dog ( annother issue  my arise with him barking so extra stress) Everything is having to be moved up and down the stairs and don’t have the strength. Charity shop are collecting stuff today but realised the fire certificate on a massive chair must have tore it off in the move. The council will only collect if it’s put outside and I can’t left it. Another expensive. Already paying for two rents for the next 4 weeks. I have no carpets and it’s kicking up dust from the concrete floor another expensive. I’m poor but still love this place as it’s a godsend having a garden. Rainbow

  • Thank you for your support, I tried to do all the things then misplaced them again. Wasting energy I don’t have zany faceJoy

  • I’m sleeping better in this place so that’s a massive improvement. Thanks for the support Yellow heart

  • That is so kind, I’m all emotional hearing this. I was throwing up yesterday which didn’t help get anything sorted, I think I had heat stroke. Anyway keep plodding Yellow heart

  • support dogs as they are the only company, friend, family I have

Not so - you have everyone on here as well Yellow heart.

  • Well done so far. It is. Sooooo stressful but it sounds like your future will be better for it

  • Thanks again for everyone’s advice and support. Still going in and out of overwhelming stimulation. But know this new place is so much better so that’s the grounding that keeps taking me out of my spiral.
hopefully I can give some advice on this experience myself in the future.

  • Just keep going,  , taking plenty of rests and  hydration. Once you get things where you want and start to breathe, you will find happiness again in your new surroundings. Yes, moving is huge effort but I've never regretted it - all 30 odd moves! Report back - we'll all be keen to see how you get on Thumbsup.

  • I moved house recently, it was as dreadful as ever. Unlike some others in this this thread, excluding my university years, Iv only moved 5 times, this was the 6th. Im 68 now.  Im sorry Ive no advice but I do wish you the very best .

  • anything drinkable - remember the glasses and cups!!!!!!

  • Thanks everyone for your advice, I’m totally burnt out. I have carpel tunnel in both wrist and my knees are shot. The van is coming at 8;30am to move everything and this was an expensive I can’t really afford. I need to get everything pack but I’m getting nowhere fast.
Plus I have two dogs. One is very old and incontinent and the other is scared of everyone and over protective of myself. We help each other. My support dogs as they are the only company, friend, family I have . But this is too much. exploding head

  • Label every box clearly with what it is and the room it's going in - put each 'room' slightly separate. Removals men are good with putting things where you ask-  as long as it doesn't delay them too much. I take a box with the tea things in my car, because they [and you!] will appreciate the offer of a cuppa & biscuit. I also take computers and delicate things in my car.

  • If you can afford book a moving company rather than try to move everything yourself. On my last move I tried to do it myself and I was so burntout and exhausted. If you can afford people to help you pack than even better (I realise this is expensive so possibly out of reach).

When you move pack one bag with the main things that you need for the first night such as bedclothes, toothbrush, favourite cup, fidget toys, TV control, and anything else that will make you feel comfortable in your first night. That way you don't have to be searching through boxed to find these items. Good luck!

  • I've moved over 33 times in my life.

    That's a lot!

I have only moved around 16 times.
