Moving house

Moving house on Tuesday and although im delighted to be moving into a better living situation (cost is a worry)

this is the second time in a year and a half. I have absolutely no support as have no friends or family. I’m totally overwhelmed and having meltdowns galore. any advice as I’m struggling big time.

  • Yes, it is always hard at first,  . I've moved over 33 times in my life. But you get used to it and in the end start to enjoy it. Look at the positive angles - new places to explore, new neighbours [might be better than previous or at least you can try different reactions with them], new facilities and shops; a new house and garden to explore and make it just as you want it. Best of all, I used to love shopping for new home and garden items.

Take it slowly, one day at a time. Keep a Journal - then you can reflect on your new experiences. Some will be not so good, but there is always something good. Get used to the surroundings and put away your belongings before you venture out - that way, you will have somewhere pleasant and safe to come back to, whatever happens. Meeting people through local clubs and events is really the last thing on the shopping list!

  • Thank you homebird, I have done all the above. It’s really the emotional overwhelm and being in freeze mode. I have burst of being proactive then my body struggles to do anything. It’s too much to do this every couple of years.

  • Hi. Ready for the day of moving I would pack in a bag anything you might need soon after you arrive at your new house.

In respect of managing things, if you need to let utilities know you have moved, do as much as you can online.

Contact Citizens Advice if you want advice about finances, or any help that might be available from them or if there are any other places with support services. Your local council may have something on their website too.

It is good that you are moving to a better living situation. I did that a few years ago and it was hard at the time, but once I got used to it things started to improve. I hope all goes well.

  • Hi Anna that is helpful ie, read the thread house move advice. I’m already on the poverty line and sometimes have to go to food banks so any expenses on that advice isn’t great. I also already do everything via email or text and that’s not clearly understood let alone when it’s really important. There is no MH support around my needs from any services I’ve been directed too. But I guess I should be grateful to have a roof over my head.

  • Hi  , I’m sorry the house move is so overwhelming. You might find some tips from this thread helpful: House Move Advice .

With the phone calls, perhaps you can try to move some of those into written conversations such as emails or texts/messages whenever possible.

I hope the move goes well on Tuesday!

    Best wishes,

    Anna Mod

  • Plus selective mutism is a massive obstacle due to endless phone calls and conversations I’m forced to make. There’s too many spoons needed that I simply don’t have. Spoon Spoon
