Favourite U.K. holiday places

Hello everyone,

we are thinking of having a shortish budget holiday in the U.K. and would be interested to hear any recommendations you might have.

What are your favourite places for a holiday or weekend break in the U.K.?
preferably nowhere too busy or hectic - we like fairly quiet places - not big crowds. Definitely not a big city.

Any ideas?

Thanks Blush

  • Yes - we went to that bakery once - it’s really good. We really like The Black Dog Deli too (in Walberswick and Yoxford). I stop drinking coffee years ago - I have really bad anxiety and it’s the last thing I need!

  • Hello,

Yes, I cycled to Shingle Street after reading about it. Quite an isolated, lone street. I enjoyed a walk around Rendlesham forest, which was the alleged UFO landing site in 1980. Yes, not many hills but it floods on the flat and I had to make a few diversions. I loved the coffee at Pump St bakery in Orfordnes, blew my head off with the caffeine.

  • The Cotswolds or New Forest - especially if you enjoy being around nature

  • Hi Zane - that sounds really nice - I’ve never been there and I’ll take a look - thank you. I don’t think I’d ever dare tow a caravan, and my little car couldn’t manage it either I’m sure! We do use a tent sometimes though - although it’s been a while, I’m sorry your mental health has interfered with you going on holiday - that’s a shame and I can relate as at times it’s been too much for me to go away from home too. Sometimes we’ve had a kind of ‘holiday at home’ - if that makes sense?! - and it’s been really nice: lots of lovely food, spending time in the sunshine in the garden, a barbecue/fire etc. Sometimes that can be as nice as going away.
Queues of traffic are certainly no fun at all!
Thanks for your kind words and suggestion - much appreciated.

  • Hello. This sounds like a really nice idea for you and your family, a nice quiet break and gentle change of scenery.

I used to holiday every year with my family but my mental health has been bad and I've not felt up to it the last few years.

Previously when my car was running we all went down near Minehead to a caravan site called Burrowhayse based in a rural area. It's quiet, lovely scenery and there's beautiful woodland walks all around. It's based on an old farm and for years me and my family went there on holiday.

I highly recommend it to anyone who likes a peaceful holiday with fewer people than you would get in a mainstream holiday location.

Here's they site in case you're interested.

We always stayed in a static caravan but you can take your own caravan or tent if you want to.

The first year I took my Capri and I towed a caravan because it's something I've always wanted to do and on the motorway I ended up in hours of traffic because a cow fell off a lorry and was walking about. No one hurt luckily and the cow wasn't either, just massive queues of traffic.

    I often think of this.

Wherever you choose to go I hope you have a nice time.

  • Yes - we went to Scotland in July years ago and the midges were a total nightmare! We were camping too - it was not great! Tbh we haven’t been back since because of that. The landscape is stunning though - so beautiful!

  • I remember going to Shingle Street years ago - and I’ve just googled Bawdsey - and found it’s near there. Suffolk is good for cycling - not too many hills!

  • Hello,

I stayed in a cottage in Bawdsey, Suffolk last year and it was located on a quiet street, near to the coast. I loved it and spent a week cycling around the area, visiting cafes. There is so much to see and people were friendly and had connections to my local area which was fun. I will go back again soon.

  • St Ives is our favourite little town in Cornwall too. Off season though. We saw dolphins in the bay last time we were there - so special!

  • We went there earlier this month! We LOVE Aldeburgh - and my husband really likes that bookshop in Aldeburgh too :) We also love RSPB Minsmere. It’s so lovely round that whole area. Pretty annoyed about Sizewell C.

  • We haven’t been to Anglesey - will take a look at that area. We’ve been to Lyme Regis & Durdle Door - really lovely. Where are good places around Weymouth? Can you recommend anywhere in particular? We like beaches - but we definitely don’t do any swimming! We like nature, woodland, walking in the countryside. And nice cafes of course! Quite like literary connections too - we went to Hardy’s birthplace a few years ago, and Max Gate. We like interesting film locations too.

  • We’ve always wanted to go to the Isles of Scilly! It’s just the extra stress of boat or plane that’s deterred us so far (and Covid issues too). But we still hope to go there one day.

  • Aberystwyth.

oh how strange, I thought you meant the names not the places. Though I do have a fond memory of my brief time studying there.

  • I love going to Stratford Upon Avon the lodges at Riverside Holiday Park it's such a relaxing quiet place

  • I know lots of places in Wales that would be ideal. I live in an 18th centuary cottage that my Mum has for sale where there is a footpath opposite leading down to a beach which not many people ever go there as its only real access is down the footpath opposite. The beach itself is a few miles long, and where one comes out from the path, the mile of beach to the left is a mix of lovely sand and small pebbles. The few miles of beach to the right is rocky and has a slight erroded cliff-like drop, so we don't go that way, but the mile of beach to the left is lovely, and where I live, the nearest neighbour takes about a 5 minute walk to get to as as very few houses here, but as we are near a road and a cyclepath, two miles east is a seaside village with a castle, and six miles in either direction are towns, one of which is touristy as has three narrow gauge railways and the ordinary standard gauge line. So many steam locos going back and fore that if I hear a whistle I hardly look, but if I hear a diesel horn I look as it is less common!

It is funny, as if we see more than about six people at any one time down our beach in the summer we consider the beach to be crowded!

But I know of lots of secluded, or semi-secluded picturesque places in various places in Wales, as being autistic and a kinda natural introvert, I tend to prefer the secluded places where not many people go, and have cpme across some real gems!

  • I’d go for a classic British seaside town like Margate, Bognor, or Blackpool. The ‘faded splendour’ and stick of rock from a tacky shop and the smell of fish and chips outside a cheap seafront Wetherspoons is a vibe for me. But I think that might a special interest me thing!

  • newquay in cornwall.... its like a foreign tropical luxury place, better than most places in spain. cant believe its in the uk lol
beaches on all sides.... busy in summer though so youd have to google the quiet times to go as it does get busy, all of cornwall does in summertime.

  • If you want quiet walks around the coast, the Isles of Scilly. I went there years ago and found it peaceful and you can walk around an island in a day. If you go to other islands it is busy on the boat, but on each island quiet. Not a lot to do if wet though.

  • Anglesey is beautiful as are the mountains of Eyrie (Snowdon), its not always so peaceful but if you avoid bank holidays and school breaks it's fine.

I love Dorset, the area around Weymouth, not the town itself which would be busy although good for food, but theres so much around there.

What sort of things would you be interested in doing, beaches and swimming, history and archaelogical sites, walking?
