Hi there
I'm wondering what people's experiences are of disclosing their autism to their employer. Please share good and bad if you feel able. Will help me work out my thoughts on it.
Many thanks in advance.

I partially disclosed (ie to my manager and his manager, but not to other colleagues). One was very supportive, one ignored it completely (but to be fair because of the nature of the job I do, I wasn't really asking for any support, just flagging that I might in future).
I told my line manager, he said he was familiar with autism as his son went to a special school. He said he always thought I was on the spectrum. He also recommended talking to a colleague who has a child with autism who requires considerable support.
So very positive - he had told me about his son before but of course I'd forgotten.
That sounds horrible. I'm so sorry that happened to you. I have not told any of my colleagues at my current work and I don't think I will at least not any time soon. I have so far only told the head of my lab and I have asked him not to share with anyone... People can be so cruel. I'm really sorry they were so mean to you. It's sad.
Hello! I'm Brazilian and I had my diagnosis 5 months ago. I had previously informed my employer about the suspicion and when I received the diagnosis they accepted it well. They supported me throughout the process. I believe that the view regarding autism is changing in companies, especially in multinationals.
I've only had one job before and it was when I was 18 and it was ok but after I disclosed my ASD I was treated differently but not good different. People made fun of me as well. I guess it depends on the place you work at. I was at Lidls and I don't think it was a good move doing it there.
I disclosed to my employer this week, the day after getting the official diagnosis, which might not have been very smart. My employer has been super supportive and friendly so far (i've only started the job recently), so hopefully it will work out fine. I can let you know how it evolves if you want? I don't feel like I need any adjustments at this point but I just wanted to be honest and to have it out in the open in case I ever do run into challenges or need some adjustments afterall.
Personally I would advise them, specifically the HR dept, disability discrimination act is on your side. If they don't advise your line manager of what they need to do to support you, that's on them. I wish I'd had my diagnosis in 2014, I think my mental breakdown might have been avoided.
