Alarm clocks with dim letters

Hi. My old plug in alarm clock has finally had it. The light was dim enough to not light up the room. I tried a new one with a green light and it was so bright I couldn't sleep. I have looked at descriptions of a few and they all say you can see the time on the opposite side of the room, so no need to squint. I just need one with enough light to see it when it is nearby at night.  Has anyone found one that is not too bright or a dimmer setting?

  • I have one that is dim and to read it I just press the button and it lights up for 10 seconds.  Very cheap.

  • I find digital numbers really hard to read as they're all variations around the number 8 and I can see the bits that are supposedly darkened. I have to really look hard at a digital number for a while to make out what its saying, not what you want in the middle of the night. It's the same when I've got my glasses on too, I can't read the clock on the microwave, so its not an eye sight problem.

  • I searched alarm clock and you are right, they all seem to be bright light which would be simply awful!
I did search for red light alarm clock then and got a few hits, there was a cheap Bush one in argos for around £8, it is a radio too which might not be wanted, but the display would be more what I would want too.

  • My red one is probably about that old. I wonder why they stopped using that colour, especially as they talk about not looking at screens before bed. I can hide dim light, so it is just the sort that lights up the room that I can't use. As it is said that there are now so many more of us perhaps that is an opportunity for someone to start making clocks with red figures for those who don't want a light room.

  • You're welcome! My iPhone has a Sleep Focus mode, which silences notifications at night - I can customise the start and end times for this.

I believe that Android phones have a similar feature, called either Bedtime or Sleep mode, depending on the model / version.

  • That's interesting about the display. My autistic son is the opposite. I have never been able to teach him to read a click face, but he understands digital. When I want to say 5 to 9 for example I have to mentally translate into digital before telling him. I used to always use my analogue, but it was not so accurate and has that glow paint.

  • Thank you for your reply. Yes mine was red. Thank you for the suggestion. I have an android, but turn it off at least an hour before going to bed so I don't get notifications.

  • I use a Lenovo Smart Clock, I hate most "smart" features on devices but it's display is really good for customisation in terms of the brightness, so it'll be like really bright and clear in the day so I can glance at it, and then at night it'll dim the display relative to the light so it's just barely visible without being distracting. I just looked and you can't buy them anymore new but they're relatively cheap on ebay secondhand.

  • These days, I use my iPhone. I have it set up so that, when it's placed sideways on a magnetic charging stand at night, it turns into a clock with large, dim, red figures (there are various display styles to choose from, all still in red). I've chosen to have the display turn off automatically, and reactivate when it senses motion.

Previously, I had a Philips AJ3115/05 Alarm Clock Radio, with red figures, which I liked a lot. It's discontinued now, but I've just checked and there are still some new and used ones for sale on eBay. There's also one here on Amazon where the price is far too high - but there are lots of reviews, which might be helpful for deciding whether to add it your shortlist.

  • I cannot use digital time, time is visual not digital for me, I look at a clock or watch face and know the time without converting it into numerals in my head. I have a clock-face alarm clock that is not illuminated unless you press the button on the top. Its alarm is also nicely quiet, I wake up quite easily and do not fall back to sleep, ever, loud alarms give me the frights.

  • Red light is the longest wave length so would have less effect than something like green which would be quite bright (blue being the worst for this). Mine I've had since 2002 and has red light and is the other side of the room. (Though this means I struggle to read it at night without my glasses). I know what you mean, as sometimes they make charging lights blue or green which is too bright and the offending item has to get hidden away so it doesn't keep me up.
