My movie picks of the week - Free Guy and The Hobbit

I watched Free Guy on channel 4 catchup last night and enjoyed it, but now it's unavailable so I can't recommend it to others to watch unfortunately. Today I got half way through watching the first Hobbit movie (An unexpected Journey). I'm not a Lord of the rings fan, but I found myself getting into this film. It's visually really impressive.

If anyone has seen Free Guy, please let me know what you thought of it. I thought the story of a video game non player character who develops into an AI and starts making his own decisions about what he's going to do a really interesting one. Jodie Comer was great in the female lead.

If you want to watch The Hobbit movies, all 3 are currently available on ITVX.

If you're enjoying watching something else, feel free to tell us about it on this thread.

  • This is a great co-incidence, Lotus!

I'm not getting as much time as I would like, lately, to be on here, so I didn't see this post.

Three days ago, I wated The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey with my niece. We both loved it!! Even though she was scared, she really enjoyed it and wants to watch the rest.

I have seen Free Guy on the advice of my nephew. I enjoyed that too - especially the funny film version of many video game tropes. When I'm watching with the youngsters, I am watching through their eyes with their enthusiasm. It's a great way to watch films.

  • Free Guy is good and so many references in it! Ready Player One is similar in that regard. Although the book is better than the movie.

I'm also not a LOTR fan but enjoyed the first hobbit film. The later ones unfortunately seemed to drag out IIRC (sorry!).

The Martian is good and scientifically very accurate, up until the last bit. I believe the thing they do is mentioned in the book as a joke because it is absurd. In the movie they do it and it works. Again, the book is better than the movie.

I've realised I tend to like movies where there's an AI learning/gaining emotions. As well as the tech/sci-fi aspect, I think I relate to them coming from very logic based thinking, trying to understand emotions. It's rated terribly, but I like the movie Stealth for that. I have to ignore all of the aviation inaccuracies and absurdities, but it's got the AI, and also the opposite with the military personnel that have to suppress their emotions.

Something different from all of the above that I liked was IF. I thought it was an easy to watch feel good film, and didn't drag out for hours like a lot of films.

  • LOTR is far superior in my view and pays more respect to the books. The Hobbit film iis quite strange, not sure how you can convert a children’s relatively short story into a trilogy? I did not care for it and barely remember it….

  • I finished watching The Hobbit - an I expected journey. There were a few scenes that went on a bit too long for my liking, but overall I was impressed. I liked Gollum in particular - the character was so well portrayed. I give it 8/10

  • I've watched all The Hobbit movies, and all the LOTR movies, as I really enjoy fantasy worlds! That's why I enjoy gaming too. Well, I used to enjoy gaming. Now I don't have any free time.

So, the first Hobbit movie is a wonderful adventure. The movie's scenery is absolutely magical! And of course we get to learn about Bilbo's journey and how he got the ring. It's a movie that everyone who've watched LOTR should watch.

Now, (and I mean right now Grin) I'm watching El Camino that was suggested to me here in the forum. I'll come back to share my opinion of this movie too.

  • A sci-fi with Natalie Portman, very good cinematic bit towards the end - the short description off IMDB "A biologist and former soldier joins a mission to uncover what happened to her husband inside Area X - a sinister and mysterious phenomenon"

I was just looking for something watchable - which this is, not in the league of "Alien" but it's half decent and I enjoyed it, for killing 2 hours.  Its a film you can either just switch off and watch or perhaps think about some of its meaning

  • What is Annihilation about?

  • I always enjoy Free Guy. It's so fun. I really want to watch Ready Player One again but it's not on any service at the moment. Blush

  • I've seen Free Guy. I thought it was ok, enjoyable enough to watch once but I doubt I'll watch it again. I think what didn't interest me about it was, since this was about a video game character and video games have been one of my lifelong hobbies, it was just a representation of what Hollywood assumed it should be like. There were points in it where it definitely seemed farfetched that the entire world was suddenly interested in how this computer generated character was going to save his virtual world. It did have a feeling of trying to force a "what if..." situation but this time with video games. Overall though it was enjoyable enough, I'd rate it middle of the road.

I've never seen The Hobbit but I loved the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, so can't offer an opinion on that.

(By the way, I'm loving these threads, I really feel I can contribute to them!)

  • BTW Ioved LOTR but not sure I've watched all The Hobbit movies - so will check out

I watched "Annihilation" on Prime last night -  didn't know anything about the film, but enjoyed it.
