My movie picks of the week - Free Guy and The Hobbit

I watched Free Guy on channel 4 catchup last night and enjoyed it, but now it's unavailable so I can't recommend it to others to watch unfortunately. Today I got half way through watching the first Hobbit movie (An unexpected Journey). I'm not a Lord of the rings fan, but I found myself getting into this film. It's visually really impressive.

If anyone has seen Free Guy, please let me know what you thought of it. I thought the story of a video game non player character who develops into an AI and starts making his own decisions about what he's going to do a really interesting one. Jodie Comer was great in the female lead.

If you want to watch The Hobbit movies, all 3 are currently available on ITVX.

If you're enjoying watching something else, feel free to tell us about it on this thread.

  • Free Guy is good and so many references in it! Ready Player One is similar in that regard. Although the book is better than the movie.

I'm also not a LOTR fan but enjoyed the first hobbit film. The later ones unfortunately seemed to drag out IIRC (sorry!).

The Martian is good and scientifically very accurate, up until the last bit. I believe the thing they do is mentioned in the book as a joke because it is absurd. In the movie they do it and it works. Again, the book is better than the movie.

I've realised I tend to like movies where there's an AI learning/gaining emotions. As well as the tech/sci-fi aspect, I think I relate to them coming from very logic based thinking, trying to understand emotions. It's rated terribly, but I like the movie Stealth for that. I have to ignore all of the aviation inaccuracies and absurdities, but it's got the AI, and also the opposite with the military personnel that have to suppress their emotions.

Something different from all of the above that I liked was IF. I thought it was an easy to watch feel good film, and didn't drag out for hours like a lot of films.
