Anxiety about imminent holiday

Hi everyone

We are going on holiday next week and my anxiety about it is accelerating. I used to be such a good traveller but nowadays the preparation, worrying about how to take all my things I need to deal with sensory and health problems, the uncertainty about the hotel, parking, and just being away from our home feels like its going to crush me. I know my wife needs this holiday and I want to do this for her, and will, but it will be so very difficult. We have cancelled two european holidays in the last twelve months primarily due to my anxiety around travelling and as I said, being away from all my safety things and spaces, and our cats, and my library.

Im not particularly asking for advice, Ive done all the cbt, grounding, breathing stuff time and over et and cet. I just always struggle with these trips now and given at the moment we are in the final phases of selling my house it will probably be a most stressful time.

Thanks for reading this

  • The house sale alone is quite stressful, we sold our family home about 2 years ago, we had been there for 25 years.
I haven’t been on holiday since before covid, I normally research the destination to death, I use internet photos to fully see what most areas will look like. I normally feel the anxiety getting better after a couple of days.

  • Yes, sometimes you just want to know other people get it.

We normally can't get past the planning stage, part executive functioning, part because of the anxiety. But we did manage to do a trip to France a few years ago, driven by my desperation to not be in the country for my 40th. (Sometimes it is having something stonger than the anxiety that gets you though).

    Just sending calm thoughts.

  • Hi

You’ve done the right thing by writing it down it should help manage the anxiety.

I have recently returned from a holiday abroad for a visit with my son and much of what you are experiencing sounds familiar to me. I also think most people who travel have worries too it’s not just us.

Anyway I know you don’t want advice so I will just say on my second day away all the worries faded away and I started to settle.

The world is a beautiful place and it would be a shame to let our anxiety deprive us of the opportunity to experience it.

  • I get very stressed too and also cancel holidays.

    I'm sorry you are suffering.

I wonder if your wife travelling independently might suit?

    All the best with this.
