Hair washing

Hello All :-)

Does anyone here hate washing their own hair.  I tend to avoid washing my hair until it gets really greasy (not good I know).

I wash my hair over my bath with a shower hose and I try and do it as quickly as possible as I hate getting my face wet.   When I was a child, my mother used to wash my hair with a shower hose over the bath and I would have to put a flannel over my face.

If I'm at the hairdressers and have my hair washed over a basin it doesn't seem to bother me.

Just want to hear your thoughts, any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

  • I didn’t enjoy it as a child, but I tolerated it.

As an adult, I can only wash over the bath. Never in the shower. Hate water dripping in my face, and also the feel of wet hair on my neck and shoulders.
I wash it once a week anyway, as my hair is super curly. Once washed, conditioned, and styled, I have to leave it sopping wet so the curls remain defined, or else I’m left with frizz. I have a towel or two on my shoulders so I don’t feel much of the wetness, but I cannot relax, and have to give a quick blast with the hair dryer if it’s taking too long. (It takes hours to dry naturally).

The next day I always have neck ache because of how tense I’d been because of the wet hair ugh.

    • I'll go a few days without a shower but that's because one I'm unemployed 2 try to do work from home when I can. And 2ndly I don't go out enough to need to shower anyway. I'll probably shower 3 and times a week when I need too basically
  • I wash my hair in the bath while having a bath.

I cannot stand washing my hair in a basin.

  • I forgot to say that I haven't had a bath for twenty years! I simply cannot sit in a hot bath. I've tried. There's nothing about it that's remotely pleasurable.

  • I find it really hard to motivate myself to shower regularly. My hair gets greasy very quickly too. I also like to have my hair washed at the hairdresser. I can't say I dislike the shower or bath, but I just seem to really hate giving time to it, like it's an inconvenience to have to do it. I suppose the hairdresser feels like a treat in comparison?

I liked it when I had a fringe because you can just wash a fringe under the tap and it makes your hair look a bit fresher for longer without having to wash the whole thing. I grew my fringe out in the pandemic though and don't go to the hairdresser regularly enough to bother putting one back in. I get my hair cut maybe twice a year at the very most.

  • Finding this thread comforting, just now accepting my issues with water being a sensory issue

Also the intense temperature changes, I hate it all! I tend to avoid washing my hair

Don't have a great deal of advice but I feel you and I'm the same !

  • Ruth, I have similar issues with washing my hair and I have been told it is another one of the wonderful impediments of autism.

Showering and getting my naked body wet is unpleasant for me generally, bit being clean is one of my favourite feelings. I also have no tolerance of the sensation of my hands getting crinkly when too wet.

I've found that making sure the bathroom is warm enough and wearing ear plugs in the shower help me a great deal because, working with an autism specialist, I experimented with different approaches and found that the major problem is being naked— and cold and then the sudden impact and then the noise of the water.

That said, I have to make a conscious effort to relax while showering, and once I do, I'm okay. And I really enjoy the feeling of being clean, it's just the beginning bits that are a bit of a hurdle to overcome.
