Hair washing

Hello All :-)

Does anyone here hate washing their own hair.  I tend to avoid washing my hair until it gets really greasy (not good I know).

I wash my hair over my bath with a shower hose and I try and do it as quickly as possible as I hate getting my face wet.   When I was a child, my mother used to wash my hair with a shower hose over the bath and I would have to put a flannel over my face.

If I'm at the hairdressers and have my hair washed over a basin it doesn't seem to bother me.

Just want to hear your thoughts, any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

  • Ruth, I have similar issues with washing my hair and I have been told it is another one of the wonderful impediments of autism.

Showering and getting my naked body wet is unpleasant for me generally, bit being clean is one of my favourite feelings. I also have no tolerance of the sensation of my hands getting crinkly when too wet.

I've found that making sure the bathroom is warm enough and wearing ear plugs in the shower help me a great deal because, working with an autism specialist, I experimented with different approaches and found that the major problem is being naked— and cold and then the sudden impact and then the noise of the water.

That said, I have to make a conscious effort to relax while showering, and once I do, I'm okay. And I really enjoy the feeling of being clean, it's just the beginning bits that are a bit of a hurdle to overcome.
