Who else on this forum doesn't own a smartphone? Comment on here if you don't have one. I would love to know your reasons why as well
I have been heartened to know that I am not alone in standing against the mind numbing, anxiety machines that rule the modern world!
I thought the alert was last Sunday? Havnt heard of another one since
theres a option in the options to turn the alerts off. but you have to dig around in the options somewhere.... as it isnt clearly listed, but its in there somehwere.... might be in notification settings... or privacy settings either one of them
My bloody smartfone just went off with that stupid government nuclear war warning tone.
My bloody heart nearly stopped, and I have actual pain now. (I'm a bit more knowledgeable about most of you about nuclear war and "posture" having made it a special interest, and they aren't testing this NOW for no reason).
Since there are no shelters or effective ABM systems to protect us I can only see sadism motivating whoever is rolling this stuff out right now, in such a hurry...
Well that's enough, they've used up their one chance to startle me that way.
Bye bye smartfone. (unless there really IS a viable opt out.)
I have a small pen on me at all times.....in my wallet. I can't think without a pencil in my hand. I can only really "read" something on a piece of paper.
I'm supposed to embrace tech at work but I'd much rather use pencil and paper. A lot of the time it doesn't make my life easier, it's a more convoluted process for the sake of it.
I've been known to slip my sim into one of these, if I think someone is going to want me to run an app.
It works very well as a phone, when you can find the thing.... And draws far more admiring comment than the latest blingy dumfone. Plus it lends itself to being hidden from the commisar very, er, easily, if you need to.

Don't buy a white one, they look naff.
I've seconded that !
Upvoted for "not getting into that now"!

If they make it so it can be done on computer as well I am OK with that and prefer a video appt to a f2f one. But not smart phones! And not forcing people if they don't have a computer either.
The problem is that what I see as a Gulag for the human spirit other people see as "empowering their freedom"
It's then only a misstep into a full on them or us scenario... As we have seen with more minor issues.
Holy Carp ! AI has made the connection between me and my Number. No. This is incalculable. [Thankfully, the AI doesn't do well with colloquial irony......my real name is Wordsworth !]
Sounds like you attend Big Brother University! I do think you should write the letter. These days there should be no reason why students shouldn't be allowed to attend lectures virtually or on video. A good, self-motivated student would learn more from reading lecture notes, or even books on the subject, than a student who attended the lectures but was hung over and didn't listen to what was said.
Personally I would also be asking if they were going to pay for the wretched thing! It's bad enough if one already has one, but completely unacceptable to force someone to buy into a system they disapprove of and neither want to be a part of nor to fund!
That's what I thought! Also that AI is assuming gender based on voice tone but I'm not getting into that now.
No. is also an abbreviation for the word "number"....
I'm a total waste of air, in reality.
Except when I'm cleaning something or warming up a cat...
Nothing I do, changes anything.
If we get the damn device producing energy, it's iherently dangerous, new technology.
I may yet step away, and concentrate on the cat warming and cleaning.
I suppose I'm lucky. I am just about old enough to simply refuse to join the wholesale digitisation of life. I NEVER do click and collect. I NEVER do internet food shopping. I NEVER book on line. I have NO social media - inc. whatsapp. It was hard to maintain this stance 5 years ago......it is monumentally hard now......and frankly, there is no point, beyond the principle of the thing. I am a principled soul.
Fun story.......I wanted to book a table at a pub a couple of weeks ago - so as you might expect, I used the telephone. Imagine my HORROR when I realised that it was an AI machine pretending to be a friendly bar-person ?!? I persevered, and got a booking for Mr No - this is because when the AI asked for my name, I said No.
Yes, I've seen it.....the ultimate ME = looks the same but is COMPLETELY different.
I am finding this happening more and more. Society, whether it be education settings or workplaces or the NHS, is forcing us to have these machines to be allowed to take part in society.
Your university course is a perfect example (BTW Im no legal expert but I think you have a pretty good case for discrimination there)My workplace does not allow us to access emails offsite without a smartphone app. When I told the IT department I didn't own one they looked at me like I was some sort of oddball or troublemaker.
Its pretty clear where its all headed
Well said

We are a "doing" species......we need to be "doing" stuff......and you know what they say about idol hands !! People need jobs. People need to feel that they can bring "worth" and that they are "needed" for a useful purpose. Non-rogue AI taking charge is my concern
I was just reading the story about Georffrey Hinton on the Telegraph a few minutes ago.I agree, have you ever seen I Robot? I have felt like Will Smith's character in that film for a long time now
