asd formerly known as aspergers

my son who is 15 has been diagnosed with asd (aspergers) what happens next? where do we go from here? i left the consultants office in a daze like state and didnt think to ask these questions! i dont know what i am supposed to do x

  • My son was diagnosed with Asperger in 2009 when he was 7. I was relieved in a way to finally have a diagnosing, and felt it was up to me to move us forward with this. I found the most helpful thing for me was the Cygnet programme a five week course run by CAMHS it's a fantastic support for parent of kid's on the spectrum. I finally feel I know my son, our relationship is better, I can manage him in a more positive way. Life is not easy as I have four younger kid's, but I have tried to absorb as much info on ASD, and feel that things could be much worse. The key is to understand your child and their needs, by basically getting a bit obsessed with all things ASD. The hard work will pay off I promise and you will be able to move forward with your child and give them the help and support they so deserve. I wish you all luck. X

  • Hello!

I am waiting assesment fro my 11 year old son.  My local GP saw my son for medical treatment to his foot and whislt we were in the room ... "Do you realise your son has Aspergers?" Erm No!!  I Just thought he was hyperactive!!  After looking up and reading about Aspergers I thought "Yes thats him!!"

All the forms filled in with a description of behaviour etc to CAHMS and yes they agree with the Dr so now we are just waiting (And waiting) for an assesment.

I am an avid learner so I took it upon myself to find out more information and enrolled on a Open University Course and I must say it is brilliant!  I have learnt alot more than I thought I would and I am flying through the assesments but I think that is beacuse its a subject close to my heart more so than something I have to study!

All I can say is read amd learn as much as you can!  Amazon have brilliant books but so does the library and the NAS website!!

  • Hi chelleas, and welcome,

Can I reccommend a book called 'Living well on the Spectrum' A workbook.

    www.amazon.co.uk/.../1606236342

There is a great deal out there to read, but do give yourself time to take the diagnosis on board.

I left the Hospital with just a leaflet; and a keen sense I was on my own. No advice, nothing. I have two on the spectrum.

You may find much provision has to be parent driven, it is the norm sadly, however thats ok, because in my experience parental support and direction is some of the best there is. The people on this forum are always ready to offer help and advice, so if you have more specific questions, just ask.

I wish you all the best on your journey

My son is no longer involved with cahms as they told him he did the e to be if he didn't want to be! He hose not to be! The consultant told us how they had gone about assessing him and the. Said he has ASD! There were no books recommended no ffuture appointment made nothing except a recommendation to visit this website sovereign a. Desperately trying to gather as much info as I can to help my son and my five other children

thank you for your reply and story at least I j is neither my son nor I are on our own ️xx

  • Our 16 year old daughter was diagnosed about 4 weeks ago and it was a shock but I did expect it. I think personally you need time to let it sink in. it also depends how far everyone is on the journey.

I have read lots and now I need to wait for my daughter and husband to start exploring ASD. Hopefully then it will facilitate discussion. Have any books been recommended as that might be a starting place?

The only thing we may need to facilitate quickly was around exams as my daughter experiences some sensory issues that effect her concentration and her link worker from Camhs is helping with this.

This website and forum is great place to start. Best wishes for this amazing journey. X
