Forums

Is it common for people on forums to respond with very long, essay-style replies or copied material (for example, content generated by ChatGPT or pasted from other websites)? I find it frustrating when I ask a straightforward question and receive lengthy paragraphs instead of a concise, direct response.

  • Yes and no. But it depends on the forum, context, question and people.

Responses require someone to spend their time for free so you get what you get.

  • Also perhaps it is worth considering that "conversational" communication does not necessarily have communication of a direct response as it's sole role.

I am somewhat accustomed to first generating a response via "internal" speech then vocalising it externally.  I have learnt the hard way that if I do not I can be misunderstood very easily or indeed may be accidentally offensive.  Some people do not engage in this process so much perhaps - they literally speak what they think simultaneously as the thoughts arise in their mind - so long rambling answers follow as the process of deliberation that might be carried out internally is voiced.

Although this is satisfactory in many situations I agree that it can be frustrating.  Being patient can be hard sometimes I agree.

Hehe as a joke I would like to add that I could write more on the topic however I will keep all reading this waiting for that!

  • Not everything is simple and straightforward nor are people in my experience - even though in some ways life might be easier where its so!

I couldn't agree with that more Relaxed

  • yes :-) hehe,I too have done so.

This may be a reflection on the complexity necessary for the response and/or the individual persons incapacity at that point to generate a concise, direct response.

If the answer is so straightforward why would one need to ask?

  • I was trying to be helpful with factual information.

An old expression comes to mind with regard to the O/P:

'Be grateful for what you get.'

    Don't be disheartened

I find your posts insightful and very helpful.

  • Over my time here, some people have tried to control how others respond but the reality is that people are free to respond how they see fit so you can’t guarantee that you will get an answer that suits you.

    Absolutely.

What matters is the effort you put in trying to help someone.

  • People generally respond in the best way they can and with good intention.

I don’t quote from Chat GPT.

I copied the information from PsychiatryUK to your request for an answer in your post High functioning vs low functioning because not everyone likes links and it worded the answer to your question better than I could manage.

I try to be factual and as I don’t have the answer to everything I thought you might find it helpful. Clearly not.

  • find it difficult (probably myself included) to keep it concise when it is a subject we are interested in or have knowledge in.

    Yep.

    We're autistic.

    It goes with the territory.

I do like concise paragraphs though rather than unbroken blocks of text.

  • So I can’t defend the use of ChatGPT, since I don’t understand the appeal of it. Someone else can speak to that. In regards to using material copied from other websites: It is so easy to just say whatever you want on a forum with no proof, so some of us want to show that we have proof.

I agree that I prefer straight-forward responses as well, but some on here find it difficult (probably myself included) to keep it concise when it is a subject we are interested in or have knowledge in.
