Why do so few womens clothes have pockets?

Just reading the thread on noise cancelling headphones gave me a thought, how do you have your phone with you when you're pottering around the house and garden? So few womens clothes have pockets for some reason and I was wondering about the practicalities of having to have a smart phone with you if you're female? Many of my clothes have no pockets and I don't want to be carrying a bag around with me everywhere, nor do I want the thing around my neck and I want both hands free, it needs to be safe or it would end up being burried under a plant or something. I don't wear belts either.

It's not just for phones, but for other things too, like tissues, or money or just to put my hands in? I've heard pockets pull clothing out of alignment, but if that the case why is it only womens clothes and not mens too?

  • Me and my mom complain about this all the time, thankfully I usually wear joggers so I have places to store my phone and other items. When I'm with others and don't have a handbag I ask for help to carry items.

I understand for some clothes but it's ridiculous how some clothes seem to have room for pockets but don't have any. It definitely depends on where you look.

  • Yes - I can’t face using a sewing machine - I find them a bit scary. I do quite a bit of hand sewing (in a very amateurish way I must admit but I enjoy it). I’m sorry about your wonky fingers. It’s frustrating when our bodies limit us - I’ve experienced that myself. I had some kind of reactive arthritis episode some years ago and even picking up a plate was painful. It was a real insight into things like that. I also have a dodgy hip after a couple of operations in childhood - when it plays up it’s very frustrating. I guess we just have to be grateful for the bits of us that are still working ok!

  • Yes, a piece of silver jewellery.

  • Many clothes for women are designed with smooth lines and fine materials to flatter the feminine shape. Fashion dictates what women should look like it seems, so for many years clothes have been impractical .

Most of the time I wear trousers or jeans that have pockets or waterproof hiking kit when walking the dogs in bad weather, so carrying a smart phone is second nature and not a problem. On fine days I have a lightweight jacket with plenty of big pockets. In the summer I use a bum bag or day pack (like a small rucksack) for all my bits and pieces.

On other occasions I resort to a shoulder bag or tote bag.

  • My technoklutzness extends to sewing machines and my fingers are to wonky to hand sew these days.

  • Maybe you could make something - from fabric?

  • I think a chateleine would drive me crazy, having all that stuff dangling off my belt, but they do look cool.

  • My grandmother had a chateleine - a waist belt or chain to hang keys, purse and scissors. They look nice on a long dress but I'm not sure with trousers. I like pockets in trousers but even gardening trousers don't seem to have them except cargo pants, which have too many. I wear a gilet as it's a body warmer and somewhere to put secateurs. Tool belts are heavy. Recently I bought a Cornish smock and put a zip in myself - this is a very useful item. It was £40 but of sail canvas and hard-wearing.

  • I was thinking of things like when I'm in the garden and in order to have noise cancelling headphones I'd need a phone to hand. It would be in the garden that I'd most need noise cancellation and I wouldn't want a phone to get muddy, wet or lost, I've found a number of things in the compost bin when it's been emptied, I'm not a fan of gilets and something dangling from my body when gardening would be a nuisance. I have problems getting trousers that are long enough, I can't wear mens trousers, and I need an elasticated waist due to scarring.

I often carry a bag when I'm out but I often don't, my coat has plenty of pockets, but I don't always want a coat.

Why is everything dependent on one having a smart phone?

  • I sometimes use a Fjallraven High Coast Hip Pack - but I don’t like things round my waist so I wear it ‘cross body’. It’s very lightweight so not annoying - but it comfortably holds my phone and keys if I’m outside or on a walk or whatever. Plus I tend to buy clothes that do have pockets - like Gilets etc.

  • I seem to remember skirts and dresses often used to have pockets. In answer to your question I think the reason is that it involves more material and takes a little longer to make, which doesn't fit with the making of clothes today.

I mostly wear trousers and cardigans with pockets for tissues. However I note that with them, there are not many that are big enough for smartphone size phones. Having said that I don't carry mine around indoors. I do find it a nuisance to have no pockets, especially with summer dresses.

  • I've worn jeans since a teenager, so always have pockets.

School uniforms were a problem for girls, as my daughter wears leggings (boys trousers have pockets). The dress started having a pocket in it, and this year the girls cardigan got two pockets! It's a step forward for equality, but also means I have more pockets to check before washing their clothes!
