Why do so few womens clothes have pockets?

Just reading the thread on noise cancelling headphones gave me a thought, how do you have your phone with you when you're pottering around the house and garden? So few womens clothes have pockets for some reason and I was wondering about the practicalities of having to have a smart phone with you if you're female? Many of my clothes have no pockets and I don't want to be carrying a bag around with me everywhere, nor do I want the thing around my neck and I want both hands free, it needs to be safe or it would end up being burried under a plant or something. I don't wear belts either.

It's not just for phones, but for other things too, like tissues, or money or just to put my hands in? I've heard pockets pull clothing out of alignment, but if that the case why is it only womens clothes and not mens too?

  • I've worn jeans since a teenager, so always have pockets.

School uniforms were a problem for girls, as my daughter wears leggings (boys trousers have pockets). The dress started having a pocket in it, and this year the girls cardigan got two pockets! It's a step forward for equality, but also means I have more pockets to check before washing their clothes!
