Why do so few womens clothes have pockets?

Just reading the thread on noise cancelling headphones gave me a thought, how do you have your phone with you when you're pottering around the house and garden? So few womens clothes have pockets for some reason and I was wondering about the practicalities of having to have a smart phone with you if you're female? Many of my clothes have no pockets and I don't want to be carrying a bag around with me everywhere, nor do I want the thing around my neck and I want both hands free, it needs to be safe or it would end up being burried under a plant or something. I don't wear belts either.

It's not just for phones, but for other things too, like tissues, or money or just to put my hands in? I've heard pockets pull clothing out of alignment, but if that the case why is it only womens clothes and not mens too?

  • I seem to remember skirts and dresses often used to have pockets. In answer to your question I think the reason is that it involves more material and takes a little longer to make, which doesn't fit with the making of clothes today.

I mostly wear trousers and cardigans with pockets for tissues. However I note that with them, there are not many that are big enough for smartphone size phones. Having said that I don't carry mine around indoors. I do find it a nuisance to have no pockets, especially with summer dresses.
