Why do so few womens clothes have pockets?

Just reading the thread on noise cancelling headphones gave me a thought, how do you have your phone with you when you're pottering around the house and garden? So few womens clothes have pockets for some reason and I was wondering about the practicalities of having to have a smart phone with you if you're female? Many of my clothes have no pockets and I don't want to be carrying a bag around with me everywhere, nor do I want the thing around my neck and I want both hands free, it needs to be safe or it would end up being burried under a plant or something. I don't wear belts either.

It's not just for phones, but for other things too, like tissues, or money or just to put my hands in? I've heard pockets pull clothing out of alignment, but if that the case why is it only womens clothes and not mens too?

  • I sometimes use a Fjallraven High Coast Hip Pack - but I don’t like things round my waist so I wear it ‘cross body’. It’s very lightweight so not annoying - but it comfortably holds my phone and keys if I’m outside or on a walk or whatever. Plus I tend to buy clothes that do have pockets - like Gilets etc.

  • I was thinking of things like when I'm in the garden and in order to have noise cancelling headphones I'd need a phone to hand. It would be in the garden that I'd most need noise cancellation and I wouldn't want a phone to get muddy, wet or lost, I've found a number of things in the compost bin when it's been emptied, I'm not a fan of gilets and something dangling from my body when gardening would be a nuisance. I have problems getting trousers that are long enough, I can't wear mens trousers, and I need an elasticated waist due to scarring.

I often carry a bag when I'm out but I often don't, my coat has plenty of pockets, but I don't always want a coat.

Why is everything dependent on one having a smart phone?
