Why do so few womens clothes have pockets?

Just reading the thread on noise cancelling headphones gave me a thought, how do you have your phone with you when you're pottering around the house and garden? So few womens clothes have pockets for some reason and I was wondering about the practicalities of having to have a smart phone with you if you're female? Many of my clothes have no pockets and I don't want to be carrying a bag around with me everywhere, nor do I want the thing around my neck and I want both hands free, it needs to be safe or it would end up being burried under a plant or something. I don't wear belts either.

It's not just for phones, but for other things too, like tissues, or money or just to put my hands in? I've heard pockets pull clothing out of alignment, but if that the case why is it only womens clothes and not mens too?

  • Many clothes for women are designed with smooth lines and fine materials to flatter the feminine shape. Fashion dictates what women should look like it seems and so for many years they have been impractical .

Most of the time I wear trousers or jeans that have pockets or waterproof hiking kit when walking the dogs in bad weather, so carrying a smart phone is second nature and not a problem. On fine days I have a lightweight jacket with plenty of big pockets. In the summer I use a bum bag or day pack (like a small rucksack) for all my bits and pieces.

On other occasions I resort to a shoulder bag or tote bag.
