Colouring in books aid my relaxation.

I have discovered a new form of therapy: colouring in books with coloured pencils. I prefer the ones aimed at children; they are cheaper and have interesting pictures in them covering different themes, like the sea-side. The adult ones tend to revolve around patterns and do not interest me.

Do any other members here share this hobby?

  • I have them at home.  They sit in my draw mostly but they are there for when I want to do that. I got a book few years ago from the Works and nearly finished it. Timeless and don't require anyone else.  I use it more of a time filler than a stress and relaxation aid though. But do have them there.

  • Yes, I like doing that as well, and I also like zentangling now, I started doing that a few weeks ago, I didnt know about it before that I thought it was just doodling. I have got some caligraphy pens and like to make patterns with them round pictures that I have cut out and join all the patterns together and colour them in, and I also like colouring in pictures cut out of colouring books and sticking them in as well and going round them with my pens and colouring it all in it is very relaxing to do

  • It's not my hobby.  Not because I don't want to do it, but because I've not yet discovered it :)  I like the sound of it because it's something that isn't that taxing to do, yet keeps the brain occupied so it isn't tempted to go off wandering thinking about other non-essential things.

I do like colouring in things.  The use of all different colours and textures would keep my brain amused.

  • Hi Hope,

I have usually found colouring in nice when I was kid, a few years ago.

As a late teenager now, I am looking into doing this more and possibly Arts Therapy and/or Drama Therapy as a "adult" continuation of the arts and in order to deal with some of my issues and to unwind more, which is not easy when you have Autism + OCD + GAD. Mind you, there are others with more difficulties anyway.

  • I don't share your hobby but I can see how it would be soothing.

I don't like having a colouring book around at the moment because my young children would colour it in "wrong" i.e. go over the lines and things that drive me mad.  Of course its not fair to object to this if its their book and their self expression, but it makes me feel uncomfortable - for the same reason I don't like messy painting activities and leave those to the school and nursery.  I can cope with stickers and freehand drawing though.
