I thought it might be nice to share our hobbies and interests with each other- we may find something new to try out. Here is my list:
Whilst it's flattering to be told I "always" make you laugh (nice to know I have my uses), you can think again if you're expecting me to come to your rescue and rebuild your home... unless it's made of Lego.
You always make me laugh. In fact, my DIY house has just fallen down, due to the laughter.
If it makes you feel any better, I never progressed beyond buying basic Lego... Partly due to looking at the cost and refusing to pay what seemed like an eye-watering extortionate amount of money.
Apologies for adding to your distress and causing you to feel persecuted. Not making any promises, but I will TRY not to do it again. Am now going to sit on the naughty step and feel suitably ashamed.
Help! I'm being persecuted for being a Lego heretic!
I think I've got mixed up - I've taken almost zero interest in Lego since I was quite young. Nowadays, the only time I vaguely notice Lego - in adverts - the ads feature complex-looking models (a bit like that Falcon ship from Star Wars, or the Lego Titanic which Luna & Shardovan discussed on here). So I assumed that Lego is pretty much for near-experts these days. That type of thing is out of the question for me, seeing as I couldn't even finish making model aircraft when I was a kid.
In any case, it's not really a matter of easiness or difficulty; my main problem is a disorganised mind.
OK, but I still reckon that even you would be able to place one Lego brick on top of another, even if you do consider yourself hopeless at the likes of DIY.
Note to self: Abandon all plans for a future discussion with Simon about the contents of my DIY toolbag.
I feel that my own interests are extremely limited. Whilst I wouldn't describe it as a 'special interest' that causes me to become hyperfixated, I do go through phases of being an absolute couch potato and watching a lot of TV. Comedy panel shows, stand-up comedy, and sitcoms are my idea of must-see TV, along with certain dramas and psychological thrillers.
Diamond painting (AKA Crystal Art) is one of my hobbies/interests that I can often become hyperfixated on when I'm in the right frame of mind for arts and crafts. This replaced a decades-long love of cross-stitch.
Adult colouring (less often). I have a preference for colouring geometric patterns, and am a fan of Thaneeya McArdle's rather whimsical colouring books. My favourite colouring mediums are glitter gel pens, fine-point Sharpie markers, and Spectrum Noir glitter brush pens.
Time-Management Computer Games (less often).
Gardening (nowhere near as often as it should be). Preference for brightly-coloured perennials, and growing flowers from seed in propagators. Immensely satisfying if the seedlings survive long enough to be planted in my garden, despite me talking to them to encourage growth. Hey, don't judge me - it seems to work for HRH King Charles.
Reading (not as often as I intend it to be). Mainly fiction, and something along the lines of a Rupert Fawcett cartoon book, and Giles Cartoons book.
Listening to music - Mainly rock/pop from the 1950s to the present day, although not averse to classical music, and music performed by military bands.
'One of the first things I bought my son when he was old was Lego. Why? So that Mummy could play with it after he had gone to bed.'
'I am inclined to think that you are possibly exaggerating'
I just haven't explained myself clearly, as usual. I should have written that it's my lack of practical ability (in everything from school woodwork/metalwork lessons to current-day home DIY stuff & so much more) that makes me nervous - when I mention, as I often do, that writing is my only ability, I literally mean it.
Simon, you don't know what you're missing out on. One of the first things I bought my son when he was old was Lego. Why? So that Mummy could play with it after he had gone to bed.
I am inclined to think that you are possibly exaggerating and would be perfectly capable of constructing something. Granted, you might not be able to state what it is that you have constructed, just that you have constructed something. Back in my Lego-playing days, I often had no idea what it was that I was constructing, although that may have more to do with the fact that there was never enough Lego or the right kind of Lego pieces for me to complete my construction.
At the moment it's art. I'm no good but i enjoy it.
I was sitting here one day listening to local radio, The guest was talking about her art group. The group was fubded by our local health authority, and was targeting people who had mental problems and those who were older, alone, and sitting watching the four wals all day.......... I thought, that sounds like me. The autism was stopping me getting in touch, but eventually i plucked up the courage. The art can be anything using things from around the house, your garden, or even rubbish from the street. It's not just painting, we've done sculpture. and lots of writing, short poems & stories. I surprised myself that i can write. When Covic came along we had to stop meeting but had weekly coffee mornings on Zoom It's stopped for Christmas now, but as i said it's funded by the local health authority, lucky to still getting money. They call it, art on presciption and the funds are limited, and a lot more people, not just me, that need help. I've come to the end of my turn, my help, a few times now, then one of the artists will phone and say someone has dropped out of the latest group, would you like to take their place ...... Yes Please.
There are lots of Lego fans on the forum, it appears. Can anybody tell me why it appeals to many autists? Me, I would get flustered because I know I'd struggle to construct anything.
shortstuff said: I enjoy up-beat tempos with lots of instrumental layers.
Fela Kuti - Afrobeat from Nigeria.
I've had many more over the years, but these are definitely my current ones
