Advice about using phones or music in bed - 11yro Aspergers son

Hi all. My son finds it very difficult to sleep at night and asks for his phone every single bedtime. Is this a bad idea? I very rarely give in but I am at a loss as to what to do. I'm also wondering if music may be a good idea? Advice appreciated

  • If you give a child a mobile phone - that child will  actually be brought up by an algorithm. You will have no influence over the child ever again. They will be influenced by a not very clever artificial intellegence. They'll be lost for ever and ever. In my opinion (as a teacher) the parents and childrens IQ level has slowly been fading away since about 2012 or so. They are loosing the ability to see nuance and to think for themselves - parents and children. Give a parent an IQ test in 2008 theyd score say 105. Give same parents a test today - theyd score maybe 70...?

  • Our son (7/yo) struggles with nightmares and goes to bed every night anxious of them. For the last two years he has the same music on quietly and it helps calm him for bedtime and the number of nightmares have reduced. In our experience, music definitely helps Thumbsup

I also used to have a CD player in my room with audiobooks on and found those night lights that create a spinning pattern on the ceiling helpful. I'd just suggest asking him why it helps him sleep and try to find something else that can help him :]

Generally, phones will keep you up because of the blue light. I know when I was that old I wouldn't have the self control to not use it for other things, but I do use my phone to listen to music or a film or something so I'm not in silence.

  • It's a tough situation. Personally I'm not a no person and if I had a child I wouldn't give them a mobile phone, but if it helped them sleep then it would be a catch 22. Maybe look for an alternative - definitely try music but it might be visual stimulation he's looking for. If you think about it the amount of light that comes off devices can light up a whole room so that shining right in anyone's eyes probably isn't a good thing especially at night. I think in the long term it would be a good idea to find an alternative because phones/devices can easily become an addiction too.

  • I find music is good to sleep with  ,but phone which generally means games send my child hyper
