toilet training

hi i have a 4 year old with ASD and am trying to toilet train him but am havin no luck!he is happy to sit on the toilet but he wont do any thing.he is starting reception in sept and they would prefer him out of nappies!!does any one have any tips or advice please?xx

  • Yeh I know I should of not put pull ups on him again but I work 3days a week but next week I have 3 days off in a row so am just gonna go for it,I also have a 22 month old boy as well which makes it harder!aww bless he sounds just like my Jayden he is similar to ur little one!!his speech is getting there he understands every thing but some times finds it hard to answer questions.he plays along side his friends in school,he is starting main stream as he loves theschool he is at he went play group and nursery there so he is used to the environment and his friends.am very worried about him going as he is very fussy with his food I will give him pack lunch but he is very limited as to what he eats,if I find he doesn't get on there will have to re think about sending him to a special school.but u need a statement to get in to special school we have applied but they think he might not get it!did ur little boy have his mmr jabs?we haven't had Jaydens done yet bit worried bout getting it done xxxx

  • I definitely think the trick is to just go for it over a couple of days. Having toilet trained 3 children, I really don't think it works to put pants on for a few hours then revert to pull ups a few hours later. You might need a big bottle of disinfectant and a pack of cloths though!!

My son is lovely. He is going to a specialist school in Sept as I didn't think any of the mainstreamschools in my area were experienced enough to look after him. He has decent speech although only enough to get his needs met. Can't answer questions or have a conversation. Enjoys being round other children although he just copies what they're doing, he doesn't join in. Has no real behavioural issues though and is just lovely to be around! How does your son get on?

  • thank u for you advice rachyjane1,i put him in pants last wk and he wet him self quite a few times,we keep telling him he will get a big present wen he does a wee in the toilet, but its not workin!!am gonna keep trying though and will hopefully get there!!how is your son affected with ASD?is he starting reception in sept?thanks again xx

  • Hey!  My son is 4 too and I managed to toilet train him during Easter holidays.  I bought a toilet training chart from ebay specifically for ASD and stuck it on the fridge.  Basically, just a simple chart with piece of velcro across it and a bag of different pictures with velcro on for him to choose and stick on his chart.  Wasn't easy though! I started the day with him just in tshirt and pants. He wet his pants 11 times before lunchtime!! I just kept reassuring him that it didn't matter and still took him to sit on the toilet after.  The one time I managed to catch a little bit of wee in the toilet and made such a fuss about what a good boy he was. To be honest though, by the middle of the afternoon, I was ready to give up!  I'm so glad I didn't though as just as I was getting him in the bath on that first evening, he said he needed a wee!!  We had a few accidents the following few days but after then he did great.  Still in pull ups during the night though and not ready to tackle that one just yet!

I think perseverence is the key. I toilet trained my ASD boy the same as I did with my other two children but just a year or so later.  I honestly didn't believe that the day would come that my son would be out of nappies and I didn't think he would "get it" but he did.  It is really hard, but try and lock yourself in the house for a few days and go for it.  I'm sure he'll get there x
