Panic attacks at night

Does anyone else suffer with panic attacks at night?
They were really bad over the summer and started again last night- I think due to the storm.

The panic attacks are usually about the inevitability of death, of my own and my loved ones. I try to accept it, but it’s such a painful thing to accept.

    • I too have panic attacks at night, like yours, they're usually around  impending death of my loved ones. I play games on my phone, but I think audio books might be the way forward.
  • Thank you for the recommendation- I’ll have to give it a read Relaxed

  • Hi, I find trying to read too hard, to my shame I have only read two books in my entire life. My brain won’t let me concentrate as other thoughts are going through my head constantly, I just end up reading  the same paragraph about four times.

I find the audiobooks along  with sound cancelling earphones really helpful. If you fall asleep, you can just go back a chapter. There no other stimulation coming in at the same time and I find the narrator blocks out my own thoughts. I’m half way through a book called Drama Queen by Sara Gibbs, she was diagnosed at 30 years old, she is very funny and sometimes sad as well.

  • I agree that the night time is the worst. It is so frustrating when you are tired and need to get to sleep.

I found the night before the storm difficult and managed to think of all the things that could go wrong at home and the effect they could have if we had to move to a hotel and work and panic over what would happen if there was a long power cut. I spent a lot of time trying to tell myself there was nothing I could do and things might not be too bad.

The most recent thing I have done that eventually works to try to switch my mind off is to bore myself. So I either keep saying a phrase in my mind or count from 1 to wherever I get and eventually fall asleep.

  • I get panic attacks on a regular basis, never seems to be a specific trigger, just happens when I feel in a panicked state. At night I usually watch something to try to calm things or I play a game, just something relaxing where there's no pressure on me. That helps me.

  • Thank you for your reply.

I get them during the day too but the ones at night seem worse somehow.

Like St said, it’s that awful feeling of impending doom.

Thank you for your advice Purple heart

  • I hear negative voices in my head. Twenty-two years ago, I had a Schizophrenia diagnosis. However, most of that was probably the Photographic Memory; from Asperger's.

  • Thank you for your reply, I’m sorry to hear that things have been or are that bad for you.

I have a counsellor that specialises in people with ASD so I talk about this with him sometimes. I know that it’s something that I need to process regularly, especially when something new triggers me or changes my perspective.

  • Thank you for your reply and the advice.

I’ll definitely try audiobooks- I tend to watch videos on my phone or read books on my kindle but they make it harder to sleep.

  • Hi there I'm sorry your getting panic attack like this. I get them during the day as well n at night they seem worse at night guess because it's dark and your tired and thoughts seem to be harder toPurple heart control. • I used to have a feeling of impending doom quite often , some antidepressants and other medications that I was prescribed I now understand have a different effect on people on the spectrum , especially if the diagnosis is wrong and subsequently the dosage and even the medicine and supporting treatment mindset etc , I got that bad I attempted suicide a few times even though I have a wonderful family and great upbringing sometimes things out of our control influence our lives . I'm blind to most everything at present and I'm suffering amnesia and other difficulties but I'm in their and I'll come back I think , things can get lost and mindsets can divert and wander when the trajectory of life changes . If you have someone you trust then take some time to think about it and say what it is don't circle the periphery of the issue because it can get enveloped and lost in your head , if you have someone your comfortable to say anything to take the opportunity whenever you can .

  • Hi, panic attacks are quite common for a lot of us, to be honest I get attacks at anytime, the night does give us too much thinking time, it’s the time when we think about our own mortality and that of our loved ones. I’ve started using audio books, they don’t wake my wife up and stop me from thinking too much. I’ve found a bath before bed with cbd oil and then sleepy tea a great help. I do take Nytol 50mg but obviously I don’t recommend them.
