New here feeling isolated since diagnosis

Hi everyone, I'm new to this online community. I rarely reach out online to share my problems, I just thought I would try and share what im going through. I was diagnosed with high functioning autism last summer at the age of 26, since being diagnosed life has become even more confusing and isolating for me, it is difficult especially because my family don't necessarily believe in autism or want to accept that I am on the spectrum, it's almost like im only labeled as being autistic when it suits them.

life for me has always felt incredibly lonely and isolating, I never considered myself to be autistic I just thought I was shy and a bit strange (people would tell me growing up), now as a young women I still have the same interests I had as a child and life is very lonely for me I literally dont have any friends I dont speak to anyone anymore not even some family members, I don't use social media anymore because it become all to much (needed a break I guess), I always struggled to make and maintain friendships and any I did have its been years since we've spoken. It is difficult for me to reach out, my life isn't particularly interesting, there's not much going on for me and I'm embarrassed about not having much to talk about with anyone.

I'm just at a point in my life where I feel so incredibly alone and stuck. I'm not in the best situation and I've never been able to find a way out of it. There's so much more I can say but for now it's really me just hoping to connect with neurodivergent people. Hopefully there's someone else out there who understands what I'm going through. I don't even know if anyone will read this but if you do I appreciate your time in reading my post.

  • Hi, welcome to the community! I wish you find here like minded people.  I did and I feel good here.

  • The two Alice books and The Lion ... were two of my favourite books.

I liked Magician by Feist when it first appeared.

Then Jules Verne, HG Wells, the gateway to EE Doc Smith and then science fiction.

Basically all just escapism. Much like Star Wars in 1978.

I liked the Hobbit, but have never been able to read LoTR or watch the movies.

History is interesting too. I think for the facts and figures, but mostly for the idea of a different world I can imagine myself in. Preferably without an untimely and bloodthirsty end.

I have visited lots of National Trust (and some EH) places for this reason I think. I went to Tintagel not long ago.

Dragons seem to have a timeless appeal. I don't know why.

  • thats great thank you i will check it out!

  • I'm another history person, I like ancient history too, but my real passion is the early medieval, from the end of the Roman Empire to the Norman conquest and then on up to the Tudors, after that my eyes start glazing over, I find the Georgians mind numbingly tedious and the industrial revolution.

I loved GoT too and Vikings, LoTR was good, but I'm not into films really.

I'm hopeless at art and can barely draw a bath!, I don't play computer games either.

Hopefully we can some good discussions going on history.

  • I remember reading The Wizard of Oz as a child and enjoying it, although my favourite books then were Alice through the looking glass and The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe.

I sometimes read young adult fiction (although I'm in my sixties now!) but I haven't read The hunger games. I did enjoy the Divergent series though.

I started a book club thread and a Sims 4 discussion thread, if you're interested:

     A book club - with a difference.

  • Ohh yeah, I spent a lot of time in various animal crossing games, though more recently it's my kids playing on the island! (My youngest was 3 when she wanted a character made for her to live on the island too, but she's big enough now to take over and play herself).  That is a good idea, I am going to go find some of that sound track music to relax with! I think I could do with some!

  • yes I agree some of the music from princess mononoke is very intense indeed, i dont know if you've ever played animal crossing but the music from all games are very calming especially when its raining in the game, all soundtracks to animal crossing are on youtube

  • Im currently playing sims 4 too, and growing up I've played most of the sims titles like 1,2 and 3 and the spin off console versions, I also love assassins creed! I've played 1,2 Brotherhood, 3 & origins, odyssey and a bit of valhalla! all really amazing games, I started to read the original wizard of oz book and after that im going to start reading my hunger games book collection (ive seen all the movies) Slight smile

  • Hey Starlight, Thank you for writing this, it really struck a chord. I've just very recently been given an ASD diagnosis (I hate that phrase, but my mind has blanked on what else to call it) at 49 years young, so I had many many years of not understanding my differences. My dad isn't understanding at all just thinks I'm daft for doing the assesments etc. As others have said, you have plenty of interesting things to talk about. I absolutely love reading about the tudors and their architecture (it's facinating) my hobbies are anything outdoors, I truly find peace when I'm on a walk in the countryside, whatever the weather and living in Derbyshire there's plenty of it to explore. I think that you can't go wrong with being a Star Wars fan, especially episodes 1-6. I hope you find comfort in all that has been written in responce to your post. Keep smiling Slight smile

  • Merry go round of life is such a lovely piece of music, that is awesome you are managing to pick it up and play it! That's very cool!

There is an album they did, called 'Merry-go-round: Studio Ghibli music' with Joe Hishashi and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. (I listen to it on Spotify). The only track that's given me trouble is The Demon God from Princess Mononke- I started getting a bit of a panic attack, till I realised it was just because this track was playing! I do like it for the intensity but have to be ready for it or I just skip that one.

  • See, you have lots to talk about with us! Blush

I like playing Sims 4 and I've also played Assassins Creed Origins, Odyssey & Valhalla which give an insight into different periods of history. I also like Star Wars, and I read a lot.

  • Hi

I appreciate how difficult it is to reach out for support and from personal experience I too understand what you're going through.

Acknowledging my vulnerability and the need for support has really helped me feel better.

All the best for your journey towards greater happiness :-)

  • Im glad to hear we like the same! I have to listened to the ghibli soundtracks I love them all, I was trying to learn 'Merry go round of life' from howls moving castle on the keyboard, still working on it now and then

  • Ohh yeah really cool diverse interests! I love studio Ghibli, Howl is one of my top favourites, along with Spirited Away. For a while on my work discord, I had Calcifer as my profile image.

Do you listen to the music soundtracks so all? Listening to Ghibli soundtracks is some of my best focus music. Joe Hishashi is a genius putting together the scores for each film.

  • Thank you im glad I've reached out its nice being able to connect!

  • Hi Starlight, you have loads of interesting interests, and there will be folk on here who like each of the sorts of things you like. For starters, I have a dog and like history, myths and legends!

  • Hi Lotus, heres some of my interests

I've always been creative. I enjoy anything artsy drawing, colouring, painting, making things with felt and also making costume jewellery earrings. I like playing the sims animal crossing and tomb raider. I love animals, especially dogs and hamsters.

I've always loved learning about history mostly from the Tudor/Victorian period but also ancient history like ancient Egypt. I like myths and legends too.

I like fantasy movies/series like GOT, and LOTR, also Star wars, Disney & Studio Ghibli movies, especially Howl moving castle which is my favourite movie ever.

I also love anything Hello Kitty, magical things like fairies and I like to collect cute stationary/art supplies.

Haha I could go on forever but yes this is me Slight smile

  • Hi and welcome to the community, you are not alone and many of us have felt the same way. What are your interests?

  • Hi  and welcome. Your story touched me, because I remember times in my earlier life when I felt alone and isolated. Making and keeping friends can be hard.

An autism diagnosis is disorienting, even though it gives answers and explanations, and it is common to experience lots of emotions after it, including confusion.

When those close to us deny our diagnosis or don’t offer support, it hurts. But know that they are maybe also confused and emotional about it, maybe even wondering if it is their 'fault'. Spoiler: it isn't  - autism is a difference, not a deficit or flaw.

You are autistic, whole, worthy and enough, just as you are.

The other replies below are wise and kind and you will find acceptance, support and friendship here.

Starlight is a great name. Keep twlnkling in your own way, and you will be seen. Blush
