Autism Fatigue...?

Hi everyone happy 2023. I was here on and off last year but been away as I had a few things to sort out with my health that's been a bit of a wild journey.

I've been suffering from fatigue but it's more than fatigue, I'm talking total exhaustion even after sleeping right through the night. I've got balance problems as well but I feel like it's to do with the fatigue. There's also increased urination at night like several times each night. I've done urine sample but no Diabetes. And then there's this headache, tingling and dull achy pain in the top and back of my head. Irritating and uncomfortable. Is this anxiety...? Or autism fatigue? I suffer from anxiety so suspecting it's that. But I did have burn out before and got tired then but this time like say it feels more than tiredness it is complete exhaustion. Your help here would be appreciated if you can.

  • Ok. I was thinking peri menopause symptoms, with the nighttime peeing, dizziness etc. You are young, so perhaps a visit to the gp for bloods, to rule out an iron deficiency. The head and neck issues might be from anxiety and tension. I do get that a lot, especially the day after my shifts at work. You could try neck exercises and stretches (check YouTube), and chin tucks etc and see if they help. If you are truly experiencing dizziness when you look up, or try to get out of bed etc where the room is spinning, then you could have an inner ear issue that is easily rectified then a specific set of manoeuvres. I have an interest in health, but don’t take what I say as fact. I’m just going by my own experiences.

  • Have you been tested for Ehlers Danlos Syndrome?

I watched this Aucademy video recently and was surprised by the sheer number of symptoms and problems in this condition.

I used to think it only related to hypermobility of joints and problems with connective tissues. However there is so much more, including the kind of chronic fatigue you mention.

  • I’m in a similar situation in believing I’m currently having some fatigue related to neurodiversity whether it’s autism or not I can’t be sure but I’ve got my first appointment with a GP on Thursday.

it’s like extreme fatigue even after a good nights sleep I still feel tired but I don’t need anymore sleep it’s then more body aches when usually I’m so active. I seem to be running at half my pace in all aspects of my life during fatigue and just wish I could be more efficient again. My brain doesn’t work as well either I get more brain fog/ make worse decisions and become more forgetful.

it’s like one big whirlwind and happens around twice a year and usually lasts 1-2 weeks the best thing I’ve learned is to just rest up but it’s hard in between working full time and getting the right amount of recovery.

  • I tend to feel fatigue not from reasonable levels of physical work, but I get really fatigued from social interaction / trying to engage with 'normal' workplace and its inability to support autistic workers.

However, that changes when I overdo the physical work, as has happened of late, due to lack of staff increasing expectations of overtime.

More time working = more tiredness physically and mentally = less ability to mask / avoid meltdown.

  • Could it be psychosomatic? When I turned 30 I felt permanently tired, run down, and caught so many illnesses, then when I turned 31 it stopped almost over night. I have since come to the conclusion because I dreaded the big 30 I was making myself physically ill through a mental process.

I have experienced all those symptoms since, but just as regular burn-out and fatigue, nothing at all as bad as the year I was 30.

  • It's one thing after another because that's life, unfortunately. I would go to the doctors to rule out anything physical first. Low b12 can give anxiety like symptoms and fatigue. You might buy supplements which your body doesn't need or can't absorb so maybe check with the dr first.

  • I wondered that. Why is it always one thing after another...? I might look at getting some vitamin supplements.

  • You need to have your levels checked with a GP first. It could be low b12 or iron or something else. If it's that mixed in with anxiety fatigue it's double whammy.
