Sudden hunger or thirst

I feel fine then suddenly I am starving or very thirsty and its like I'm a baby, I just have to eat or drink immediately.  It's odd and can be inconvenient.  I need to make sure I have supplies with me if I go out incase it happens.  Just wondering if its a shared autistic thing or not. Anyone else have this?

  • Yes when it comes I can't focus on anything other than getting food. It's a stronger signal than thirst but I do still get that too.

  • Ah yes I was tested too but as you the blood results were fine. Yes I will read up more on interception,  I did read firemonkeys link.

  • The discomfort of hunger can hit pretty hard. Though with thirst, I personally find the opposite to be true, as I'm often severely dehydrated due to low awareness of it.

  • I absolutely relate to that! I always take something with me. In my case I start feeling not only starving but also low. I was examined for possible diabetes but it turned out my blood results were perfect. So I think the explanation here is poor interoception. I also have this problem at work, but here I remind myself about lunch when my late shift colleague is coming. Otherwise I concentrate on my tasks so deeply that I would have worked whole day without meals

  • Thanks all, yes if I'm busy mentally focused I forget to eat and drink  so maybe when I go out I just am running on empty and it catches up with me?

Good idea Roy about using news slots as reminders to hydrate.

  • I used to get this, but I changed the way I eat and now don't need to snack between meals. Our bodies crave routines, and to know when food will arrive. I eat meals at regular times. You might like to look into how to keep your blood sugar more regulated, that will cut down the craving for immediate food. I don't think it's related to autism, I just didn't understand how to best fuel my body.

  • I feel slightly different in that I rarely feel hungry or thirsty, I have the radio on all day and use the news slot every hour to remind me to drink.
