Learning Emotional Regulation/Intelligence as an Adult

I am late diagnosed in my 30's and struggling to find resources or tools for helping to develop some emotional skills that aren't aimed at children or those with learning disabilities.I  have a feelings wheel that I find a bit helpful in identifying emotions but I'm really looking to see if anybody knows of any other resources that could help?

I work full time where I am given all of the accommodations that I need to happily do my job well. I'm looking to build some skills outside of work with managing my emotions, and developing healthy social relationships. I struggle with identifying and communicating my feelings without having a meltdown.

  • Hi and welcome to the community!

You might find some of the suggestions in this two-part blog (by Thrive Autism Coaching) helpful.

In addition to the emotion wheel (which you said you're already finding useful), a wide range of other practical ideas / strategies to consider, including:

    • Practicing mindfulness
    • Doing reflective journalling
    • Developing "active listening" skills
    • Learning to name your emotions
    • Seeking feedback and perspectives from others
    • Applying the pause technique
    • Using apps that can help with tracking emotions and developing emotional intelligence
    • Working with a specialist coach
