Songs from your youth that mean *more* to you now.

A brief discussion with Mr T reminded me of a song that means more to me now than it did at the time.

I'll leave it to Mr T to post that song,

Mine is

Björk - Hyperballad (YouTube Video)

As far as I can guess it is about putting on a brave face to be with your loved one. It brings me to tears every time. In my 20s it was just a song that I liked.

[Verse]
We live on a mountain right at the top
There's a beautiful view from the top of the mountain
Every morning I walk towards the edge
And throw little things off
Like car parts, bottles, and cutlery
Or whatever I find lying around

[Pre-Chorus]
It's become a habit
A way to start the day

[Chorus]
I go through all this before you wake up
So I can feel happier to be safe up here with you
I go through all this before you wake up
So I can feel happier to be safe up here with you

[Verse]
It's early morning, no one is awake
I'm back at my cliff, still throwing things off
I listen to the sounds they make on their way down
I follow with my eyes till they crash
I imagine what my body would sound like
Slamming against those rocks

  • Nico is very good.  You have excellent taste Deb.

  • It's the inevitable passage of time, I think, which isn't so apparent when you're younger.

Time is something I've thought about a lot.

  • I had to google that -

"Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" by Fairport Convention?
I can relate to time slipping away..
  • Wow! Yes, splendid isolation - we all can relate to that!

  • This. Although it predates me by 30 years, still, it's a song from my youth, once a nice melody, but with the passage of time, the lyrics have meaning for me now that wasn't there when I was younger.

    Across the evening sky,
    all the birds are leaving,
    But how can they know,
it's time for them to go?
    Before the winter fire,
    I will still be dreaming,
I have no thought of time.

    For who knows,
    where the time goes?
    Who knows,
    where the time goes?

    Sad, deserted shore,
    your fickle friends are leaving,
    Ah, but then you know,
it's time for them to go,
But I will still be here,
I have no thought of leaving,
I do not count the time.

    For who knows,
    where the time goes?
    Who knows,
    where the time goes?

    And I am not alone,
while my love is near me,
I know it will be so,
    until it's time to go,
So come the storms of winter,
and then the birds in spring again,
I have no fear of time.

    For who knows,
    how my love grows?
    And who knows,
    where the time goes?

  • I listened to this one today, for the first time in a long time. I can't say that I understand what all of the phrases mean, but parts of it feel very accurate and apt!

Splendid Isolation by Little Angels (from the album, Jam):

Here in my room, in splendid isolation
Alone in the gloom, in splendid isolation
Sometimes I need to be, left in my own company
So here am I, in splendid isolation

I'm falling away, in splendid isolation
I'm hoping I'll stay, in splendid isolation
If they were right I'd agree
But it's them they know not me
So here am I, in splendid isolation

I'm floating in a sea of my subconscious thought
And the skeletons are crawling from my closet walls
No one ever sees me, I don't make a sound
And I don't know what I'm gonna do now

The motherless itch has got the best of me
Transcending the things that I will never be
But all along hallucinating life somehow
I still don't know what I'm gonna do now

The pressure starts to push me through my loving daze
For a moment there I thought I'd lost me wicked way
It's not that I'm a leper when my mind allows
I don't know what I'm gonna do now

Lennon is a memory in a student brain
Gripping thought pavilions guilt in freedom's chains
The virginals construction makes the masses wow
And I don't know what I'm gonna do now

Well, I see the moon, the stars, the hemisphere
I see the future and it don't look clear
The past is re-appearing on my fevered brow
And I don't know what I'm gonna do now
Yeah, I still don't know what I'm gonna do now

  • I was blocked for a day, and like you have had all my attempted post put up, rather than just one Joy

  • I listened to Talking Heads when I was a teenager and into my 20’s. I really enjoyed their music, it was just there and  on the radio and jukeboxes. It was different.
A few months ago ‘I disappeared down a rabbit hole’ and now they mean so much more to me.

This is my go to track at least once a day.

  • Green day good riddance (time of your life) came out when I was around 20, it became a firm favourite and will be played at my funeral.https://youtu.be/CnQ8N1KacJc?si=5gIa92O-yVL8NMsT

Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road

Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go

So make the best of this test, and don't ask why

It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time

    It's something unpredictable

But in the end, it's right

I hope you had the time of your life

So take the photographs and still frames in your mind

Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time

Tattoos of memories, and dead skin on trial

For what it's worth, it was worth all the while

    It's something unpredictable

But in the end, it's right

I hope you had the time of your life

    It's something unpredictable

But in the end, it's right

I hope you had the time of your life

    It's something unpredictable

But in the end, it's right

I hope you had the time of your life

  • My sons' middle name is Riley primarily because of this song.

  • Russians by Sting.

  • That is a great song, But I think Imagine has a strong message to it

  • How about Mind Games?  That's a good song too.

  • and one of the best songs of all time!

  • Imagine by John Lennon, I will always consider this to the the best song he has ever written

    Imagine there's no heaven
    It's easy if you try
    No hell below us
    Above us only sky
    Imagine all the people
    Living for today... Aha-ah...

    Imagine there's no countries
    It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion, too
    Imagine all the people
    Living life in peace... You...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

    Imagine no possessions
    I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
    A brotherhood of man
    Imagine all the people
    Sharing all the world... You...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
