So cut me some slack because what I'm about to say is likely to annoy some people but it's not an accusation against any one as such. But don't you get tired with the threads here. 60% seems to be parents going 'my child X please help.' Even if you restrict yourself the autistic adults forum so much of it is so trivial and boring every day. I've started clasifing the difrent classes of boring threads I'm reading, they are so predictable.
Threads I miss seeing and that seem to be getting rarer:
I'm not saying everything has to be like a oxbridge debating sociaty but it would be nice if we could have a few more meaty discussions around here. I'm surely not the only one who feels that way?
This place is intended as a safe haven for vulnerable people, not a place for controversy. It's impossible to have a "meaty" discussion if the mods censor anything that risks upsetting somebody.
Ah but in the process do you not make it unsafe place for people with controversial opinions?
is it a place where you are safe to speak your mind or a place where you are safe from opinions that might upset your sensitive soul? there are many different kinds of safety and I know for myself I prefer the safety of knowing I can have a fair hearing and speak my mind without having my head bitten off before I’ve even made my point.

That's what the mods want. You have to keep your discussions as inoffensive as possible here, since there are some really vulnerable people around. There are other places for more "meaty" discussions.
Debate is offencive? Are you not falling into the trap of conflating debate and name calling? I admit we've had too much name calling and other bad behavior but there are respectful ways to debate even the most controversial topcs don't you agree? Can't throw the baby out with the bath water just because people tempers get out of hand sometimes.

Yes I understand that but the types of discussions you are referring to are offensive. No one deserves to be discriminated against or rejected particularly on a forum for our neurokin who face such things on a daily basis in the offline spaces. All of us deserve to feel safe in a space literally designed for us.
Truth is offencive to those for whom it is inconvenient. Offence is not the overriding factor here. In an argument some one must be wrong and there must be a right answer. The refining process of pulling the truth out of the white hot heat of argument can't be put on hold because it makes people uncomfortable to have their preconseptions chalenged.
Controversial topics are rarely intellectual! They are reactionary, mostly designed to try and push one group into allowing for another's hopes of claiming ideological hegemony. I think a a few nights snuggling up with Descarte for a few hours might help us all!
Peter said:I just regret that all the people who used to enjoy having intellectual discussions about controversial topics seem to have left or been cowed into silence.
That could be because the controversial discussions were offensive and therefore it is right that they no longer continue.
