Because of a few things that have happened recently, I thought these points might be useful to some:
1. If you want to be friends with someone and send and receive PMs, other than the friendship request you need to have your settings on accepting PMs from 'friends only' or 'everyone'.
There is someone on my friends list who I recently accepted, who either doesn't have their settings correct, or doesn't want messages, or there is a technical problem, as I can't message them back.
2. When you 1st send the request and it includes a message you have written, the only way for the recipient to see that full message is if you have notifications, and then you may/should be able to read it there.
In my case unfortunately, it's in another email address which I set up when my own one became inaccessible due to a NAS technical problem.
3. If you find that you don't want PMs from someone you are receiving them from, as I understand it, you can either change your settings to 'no one' or have 'friends only' set but then remove them as a friend.
I am assuming this works but haven't had cause to do so.

As you know, I too found myself in the same situation... Received a friend request, but found I couldn't message the member back to explain that I was only able to view the first few words of the message accompanying their friend request.
Some time ago, I e-mailed the Community Manager with suggestions for ways the Community could be improved. In this e-mail, I mentioned the issues relating to PMs... The fact that if one wishes to PM a member who has their message settings set to Friends Only, one has to send a Friend Request with an accompanying message, which the member is unable to view in its entirety because it doesn't go through to their messages. Instead, what the member gets is a notification of a Friend Request, with the first few words of the accompanying message.
Not only can it be frustrating for the member receiving the Friend Request, but frustrating for the member who sent it, especially if they had spent time writing a lengthy accompanying message.

I know from speaking to a mod quite a few months ago that the technical side of things is outsourced and therefore out of the control of NAS and that at that time (of course things could have changed) the mod said that they find the time taken to sort out problems frustrating at times.
