Stimming

Hey, I was just stimming away and wondered if anyone else has any weird stims they do? Even without realising? Here are some of mine:

  • I rub my fingers on my eyelashes constantly. I’ve done this since I was a baby. I love the feeling of it on my fingers and  knuckles, but also the slight pain I get in my eyes and eyelids!
  • When I’m walking anywhere I will tap my fingers to my thumb one by one really quickly.
  • I will often sit in really weird positions so that I can feel my joints being stretched to their limits (when I’m really stressed it feels as though it’s to the point they could break). This could be sitting with my leg over my shoulder, laying over the end of my bed so my back is arched with the back of my head on the floor
  • Rubbing my hands on things like carpets, brick walls, hot radiators
  • Purposely causing my body to cramp for the pain release when it eases off
  • Tapping my fingers on walls and doors as I walk past

i sound a bit of a weirdo really...

  • oh and click my fingers repeatedly

  • I do the stretching thing! I'm actually really excited right now as your the first person who does this that I've spoken to! I push myself up on things to stretch my forearms. After doing this for years I have fantastic upper body strength. I will hold onto things and lean back to extend my arms, I was made fun of in my office job last year and also when out in a bar. i also stretch my calf muscles. Ive been told at physio that I'm hypermobile, so i will really have to stretch out and its so obvious to others.

I chew and suck fabric (towels are my favourite but it does mean we have lots of tatty looking towels and I have 2 cracked teeth)

    I fiddle with gem stones

Also pull on my hair, I have balding spots :(

  • Purposely causing my body to cramp for the pain release when it eases off

I think I do this too - and just did it to see if I'm right :-). Yes, I think so. Although for me its not about the pain easing off, just doing it for the sake of it.

  • Oh yeah that's probably what happened to me too actually, that makes much more sense lol

  • I reckon i wasn't doing it more, I probably do it all the time without noticing, whereas the glue friction just made me notice more.

  • Oh yeah! This has happened to me before too. I also hated how it made it feel different. I found myself doing it even more than usual because of this but I don't know why. Did you?

  • I got a bit of superglue on my index finger the other day, and it turned the skin hard. I really noticed just how often I rub my fingers for the next couple of days!

  • I tap my fingers to my thumb one by one too, and also do a figure of 8 with my thumb on my finger, I find that one the most satisfying. I will also spell out certain words that people have said with my finger on my leg, usually when anxious in a social situation. When I get really nervous I put my thumb nail just slightly under my other nails one by one so it hurts ever so slightly. I also have this thing that I do where I run my fingers up the bridge of my nose, then push the hair out of my face, and then rub my upper lip. It has to be done in that order. Haha I feel like a weirdo now!

  • Hi, not at all!  I do the finger tapping as well, plus wrapping my legs around each other and other weirditudes such as eyelash and eyebrow pulling.

Yesterday I had a business meeting all day and I had to settle for a massive doodle on my notepad. I am carrying a stim deficit and I'm exhausted, slept terribly and had cramp all night.
