I hear a lot about masking, but I'm not aware of myself consciously and deliberately doing that. I wonder however. Can masking be a subconscious/reflex thing rather than something that you purposely do?

Yes. It's human nature to try to fit in. It is self preservation.
I am a fan of Shirley Jackson . Her stories tell of what happens when a human society needs to find an outsider to vent their anxieties upon... someone who is a bit 'different'. They identify a candidate and then they persecute and murder them. Who wants to be in that position?
This sounds a bit like scapegoat theory. The majority finds one person or a minority that they can blame all 'evil' on?
Is this why they killed Piggy in Lord of the Flies? A book that I hated when we "studied" it in English Lit but now I remember the backbone of the story and see it play out often........

Yes. But Piggy wasnt autistic. Just chubby asthmatic and short sighted. That's enough I guess to be the weak link in that situation.
