ASD children in BESD special schools

My son is really struggling in his first term in a BESD special school (year7). Does anyone know of any research or evidence to demonstrate whether this is or is not an appropriate setting for Aspergers children? Thanks

  • No he is really struggling with his behaviour and becoming increasingly aggressive snd abusive at home and at school.

Does he behave well at the besd school? Does he behave better or worse at home?

Can he articulate to you what they do at school with examples of things that he likes or doesn't like.

Does the school claim expertise in autism or do they just concentrate on managing their students?

  • Thanks for replying

He does have behavioural difficulties, due to his poor social skills, and can become violent and abusive, but I was wondering if the setting is excarbating these and he would be better in a school that specialised in autistic children. I didn't know if there was any evidence to support this.

  • If I could venture to ask, is he himself significantly affected by behavioural, emotional and social difficulties (aside from the social issues associated with autistic spectrum)?

There is a tendency for some local authorities to offer placings in BESD or learning difficulty contexts, which aren't really appropriate to someone on the spectrum. The learning difficulty contexts mean a child on the spectrum may get less choice of courses, and less access to GCSE/A Level on the basis most of the kids aren't likely to need these.

Similarly a BESD environment may mean that most teaching and support time is taken up with the majority behavioural issues, so for a child on the spectrum who might be more able to learn, the environment is restrictive.
