Leaving school help

My daughter, Chloe, is leaving school at the end of this school year. She will be 18 by then. She is looking round colleges with school, seeing if she would like to go to any.

She would love to work with sen children, mainly with autism.

My fears are transitioning her out of school ready for the summer holidays, which she already struggles with.

How can I make leaving school easier for her? Does anyone have any tips?

Many thanks,

Lucy

  • Can you find something structured she would like to do that can be maintained through the summer holidays eg volunteering with SEN children?

  • We have looked round a college which is close to home but unfortunately they can't meet her needs. The issue is with her needs is that whilst she is extremely intelligent academically, she needs a lot of support to communicate, socialise, sensory wise, mentally and emotionally, which is really hard to find a place which can support this.

She also struggles to be in a classroom with more than 4 people, which college, are bigger sizes and even in the SEN departments, can be around 8 students and 2 support staff. She needs to be 1:1 really.

We are having a meeting with another college to see if it will be a good fit for her but if it's not, what other options are there for her which can help get the qualifications she needs to work with children with autism or sen?

    Thanks in advance,

    Lucy
