Hello all, i am new to this so please bare with me,
My son is autisic and since starting secondary school has not been able to cope.
He cant cope with a classroom full of other children, he feels embaressed about himself (he has tiks but not vocal)
The school at first were very understanding, gave him a part time timetable, but his attendence is still so low and his education is suffering. The school are now not communicating with us or understanding what he goes through, they just want him back full time and that is it.
Its getting to the stage where we are considering online schooling for him.
Has anyone else had such problems? Sorry for the long message but im really hoping to hear im not the only parent who is struggling right now.
Lauren
Hi Lauren, Sorry to hear that you're having such a difficult time with your son's schooling and communication from the school's side. We do have information here on the NAS site about education for children on the autism spectrum you might want to have a look through. The education hub is here - https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/topics/education - and you can find information about getting extra help at school in this section - https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/topics/education/extra-help-at-school We also have a section on attendance problems/school refusal for parents - https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/topics/education/attendance-problems/parents - which includes strategies to discuss with the school to try and provide a more welcoming environment. And if you continue to have problems with communication with the school or feel they aren't providing sufficient support, there are also sections on resolving differences - https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/topics/education/resolving-differences Hope this is of some help,Ross - mod
