HI

Hi my 13 year old daughter has just been diagnosed as having aspergers syndrome now we are told to go it alone. Please help its a minefield out there. She goes to a small school with only 30 children as she cannot cope with noise and crowds but when she melts down the head treats her as a nauhgty child. I feel like all i do is moan and groan as no one seems to want to help.

She has no friend. What can we do.

Please help

  • www.ipsea.org.uk has information about applying for statements and more.

http://www.parentpartnership.org.uk/find-your-pps/ is the Parent Partnership who can liaise with the school and assist with educational matters and will have a local branch.

Apply for a statement yourself here: https://www.gov.uk/apply-special-educational-needs-assessment.

Contact your social services department here: https://www.gov.uk/apply-needs-assessment-social-services

  • When I went down the statement route, I started the ball rolling by sending an email to the LEA (there is specific wording that you use relating to your right under a certain Act to get your child accessed).  Anyway, they then sent me a load of info on the process with deadlines.  You then send off your report plus Dr's report, school report .. basically as much info to support your case.  Then send the whole lot and await a decision.  The process can take a long time as you need to gather evidence and they may request an educational psychology report.

Let me know if you need to exact wording and I'll dig it out.

  • Hi - there's info on the home pg if you type in educational statement or similar which shd be helpful.  I don't know what part of Britain you live in so don't want to give advice if it differs between, for example, England + Scotland.  Remember you can apply yourself.  You don't need a professional to do it on your behalf.  Your council social services dept will have a section relating to "learning disabilities" or similar title.  For children it shd come under the Education + families dept (check out your council's website).  I wish I cd be more accurate but councils do vary a bit in titles + also what's in their depts.  I know it's more work for you, but it is worth it.  It's so very unfortunate that services don't automatically link up once a diagnosis is given to save parents + their children so much heartache.  Please let us know how you get on.  You shouldn't have to be doing this.

  • How do I go about getting her statemented, They say she has no learing  difficulties but she missed a year at school and walks out of class when its too noisy.

How do I get her a social worker involved. Please help.

  • Hi - welcome.  There's loads of info via the home pg + also on the posts, some with links, so if you havent have a good look around.  Also you should request a statement of educational needs so your daughter can get the support she needs at school.  There may be a support group in your area - you can find out via the home pg.  The lack of support can be shocking + we have to fight to get what we need for our children.  I presume you don't have a social worker allocated to you?  I know things seem so difficult right now, but you've done well to get the diagnosis. Ask any questions you want - people will try + help.  You're not alone on here.
