Please help !

Hi there,

I'm looking for a bit of advice with our 5 year old boy recently diagnosed with ASD.

It's now getting to the point when we fear to take him out to the playground, softplay even supermarket as he runs at babies (and they are everywhere as you know) in the prams, carriers and either presses on their chest or tries to poke them in the eye!

It's getting more and more upsetting /although I am always watching him and trying to block this unwanted behaviour/ to keep on apologizing daily and getting strange looks and comments from the parents...

We have tried explaining , social stories, even getting toy-babies but nothing seems to work...

Please help I am willing to try anything as staying at home all day can't be the answer !

Many thanks

  • Hello.

When you say recently diagnosed with ASD, I was wondering how long you have noticed that he has had these symptoms. Do you suspect he has always had it, or did you notice a change at a certain time?

I really do understand how difficult it is for the family to function with a child who needs constant care.

I hope you get some time to answer,

    Thanks.

  • Hi Harlequin,

I thought at first that he can't hear /around 12 months/ had no idea about autism back than...Gp laughed it off but referred us for hearing test which came out fine...18months we went back to gp with our concerns of no talking interacting as children his age but yet again we been told by GP that he will not stop talking soon and children just develop in different pace..22 months check up with  health visitor ( horrible woman) giving me stares and shaking her head how come I didn't notice anything earlier...

From there we got refered to behaviour therapy speech and language and paediatrician which took time .

Eddie was diagnosed after first visit to paediatrician with global developmental delay at 3 years 3months.

That was first time autism spectrum was ever mentioned to us...

We got official diagnoses of ASD this July, he is 5.5 years old...

To summarise your question in my son's case in definitely got more 'visible ' with getting older.

    Take care x

  • HI

Thanks for replying so quickly and with good information. How annoying that you raised a suspicion with your GP, for it to be discounted, then to be moaned at by another health worker for not raising the concern.

I see that you are a mum of 4, so you would definitely know if something was different this time around. I take it you had a normal pregnancy. Did Eddie have his vaccinations like your other kids? I think the Vitamin K is always given at birth.

I know that people are often keen to find a name or label for the condition, but the practical difficulties are still there. And I can't imagine how hard it must be with 3 other children to manage.

In my case, my son was 10 when he developed ASD symptoms, which seemed to appear overnight. It wasn't normal and easily noticeable. Had he been like that from a younger age, I may have been resigned to not look any further and learned how to cope with the condition. It turns out that my son's condition was caused by environmental factors. My son is doing a lot better now, and what helped him might not help everyone... but when you wrote..

Please help I am willing to try anything as staying at home all day can't be the answer !

I felt compelled to write. Not fully sure of the rules of this discussion forum and would have private messaged you instead since you asked that direct question.

    Take care,

    x

  • Hiya,

Sorry Bluebabyboymum. I thought I read that you had 4 kids. Oops.

I also didn't think that a 10 year old could suddenly exhibit symptoms of Autism & Alzheimer's in the space of 6-8 months either, but my son did. Dementia in a 10 year old? Thought they were things you were born with or what happened as you went into old age. Apparently not in his case. My son had all of it and was extremely ill. All documented and baffled everyone. But I was able to find something that brought him back. He is back to his normal self now.

Ok...hope you get some help soon.

    All the best

  • Often what happens with the late-presenting child is that they have some inherent ability when it comes to masking. This is extremely common in females but can occur in boys too.

Usually at a time of change (moving up to high school, puberty hits, etc.) the child finds that keeping on top of schoolwork, socialising and masking at once is too much and they just suddenly lose it.

  • Hi Harlequin,

Just to clarify I'm not mum of 4 ! I have two children and one of these is autistic-Eddie ...

I didn't think you can develop into having autism, surely you are born with it but as I said with his age it got more 'visible.

    Best of luck !
