Toothpaste

Toothpaste. Has anyone managed to find a toothpaste that doesn’t taste absolutely horrible? I used to use a Colgate Total toothpaste (which did taste unpleasant) but then they recently changed the recipe and it became much more horrible. I’ve since been trying lots of others and I hate them all.For example a Sensodyne Repair and Protect that has the most appalling texture. Lots of the, I’ve tried and they’re all horrible. Plus they are so expensive that trying different ones and not liking them is costing me a lot of money.  So I thought I’d ask on here to see if anyone has any recommendations. 
When my children were very young they had a very nice strawberry flavoured toothpaste. So why can’t there be a toothpaste for adults that isn’t always minty or just horrible tasting? We’ve put a man on the moon so why can’t we make a toothpaste that tastes and feels nice? 

  • Do you remember Euthymol? They still make it, but I think it's one you either swear by or at!. I use Kingfisher, fennel toothpaste as I don't like mint, there are all sorts of alternatives to a tube of toothpaste now, some are little tablets that disolve and you brush with that, the ones I remember were violet flavoured, horrible, but if you like Parma Violet sweets then you've probably love them.

    I haven’t heard of Oranurse - I’ve just looked it up and it looks really good - we’ll definitely give it a go. Thank you so much for telling me about it!
    When I was pregnant and had morning sickness cleaning my teeth regularly made me be sick - it was awful and with my second child I had morning sickness for 6 months bizarrely so the cleaning teeth situation was so horrible and I dreaded doing it. 
    That’s interesting to hear the advice of your dentist about cheaper toothpaste - that’s very good to know. Some of them are nearly £10  which is a bit mad. Plus I basically know nothing about the actual efficacy of any of them. So your dentist’s opinion is helpful to know. Thanks!

    I have some of them give me a slight burning sensation too. It struck me that it’s something we use everyday and yet I haven’t got a clue what’s in these things. Some of them have a horrible chemical taste (to me anyway). I’m surprised no company produces a great tasting toothpaste because if they did it would sell like hot cakes. 

  • I had a strawberry toothpaste when I was younger too. Try Oralieve. They do a very mild mint one that I found perfectly tolerable. They also do a flavourless one but I've never tried that. 

    I did see an advert for flavoured toothpaste recently. They did a variety of flavours but were extremely expensive so I didn't bother trying it. I think it was called zing.

  • My daughter was complaining that the taste of toothpaste was making it difficult for her. (she used to have the strawberry stuff when she was little too) I tried buying her Oranurse online, it's a non-flavour one and she likes it a lot better. The tubes are very small though. 

    I've had issues with brushing teeth for decades, I always power through as it's important, though gag a lot and very occasionally I get physically sick if toothpaste goes to the back of my mouth. (I can't tell now whether it's flavour or phobia)

    After listening to a podcast where they spoke to a dentist and he said he buys the cheapest one possible as only fluoride matters, I tried a really cheap basic one and it's a lot better, not too minty and doesn't froth up too much so less likely to make me feel ill.

  • I just use Colgate total. I think the texture has changed too. The flavour has changed a couple times I think. I am not sure if it is intentional, I thought it was just me. I find it fairly inoffensive.

    I seem to be allergic to the Sensodyne stuff, after a couple of days it irritates the inside of my lips. It's done it twice, so I think it is the cause.
