A loaf of crusts

I was enjoying a marmalade sandwich made from two crusts. I was thinking, some hate crusts while others love them. What about persuading manufacturers to make loaves comprising crusts only with other loaves 'inners' only? Would it be possible to make such a loaf? Perhaps I should email James May.

  • I can't stop thinking about marmalade now. Bitter orange is definitely top for me, with shred.  There is sometimes lemon and lime in the fridge as my husband likes it and my daughter had a phase of this on toast. I have had multi fruit, and three fruit too from a little home-made shop. It's nice to try different one's, including my father-in-laws diabetic one when we visit, but I always go back to the main one. I'm sorry I had to talk more about it, I don't think I would sleep if I didn't.

We freeze our bread to keep it fresh.

  • I eat the crusts as well, seems daft to waste them.

From a logistical perspective since the loaf is sliced by machine and bagged, separating out the two ends adds extra steps. The crustless loaf is smaller unless made up with additional slices to make the weight, which would be hassle.

You get 2 crusts but 12+ slices. So you need multiple loaves to make one crust only loaf. It is possible but the machine is more complicated and costly. So you would pay a premium for the crusts, which may be unattractive.

I don't see why the would dry out. They are in a sealed plastic bag. Store in the fridge and bread lasts for ages.

  • Would a crustless loaf not go off quicker? I always assumed the 2 end pieces were just there to stop as much air getting to the inners. Ive hardly met any people that eat the crusts. Each to their own though.

  • I don't make it into a sandwich, but fresh bread and marmalade is heaven. If you don't put the slices together you can have twice the spread.

  • I prefer the crusts toasted, but yes it is the best.

Marmalade is a rountine food for me, I always need to have it in the house.
In high school my afterschool snack was two slices of toast, one marmite, one marmalade. I think because we have bagels every weekend for breakfast, i've eased off the marmite, and it's been one butter and one marmalade. My favourite is Bonne Maman Bitter Orange Marmalade.

  • Sorry, but did you willingly eat a marmalade sandwich?

We always have bread from our bread machine so crusts are totally different to shop bought bread. Having made bread for many years I don't think it would be poosible to make one of just crusts, I think that even if they put together a loaf of crusts and a loaf of innards, the crusts ones would have very good shelf life as they'd go dry and hard quicker.

  • I'll email some of the manufacturers and ask - for a bit of fun! Marmie sarnies are lovely - toasted ones with cheese are especially nice.

  • Good morning Paddington!!Bear

I've never thought of this before but are there really people who like crusts... apart from you and maybe Paddington....I find them a bit flat and empty.

And yes maybe make a loaf without them... although this may already exist...I think I might have seen a crustless loaf. ..but it may be that the edges are missing.
