What is/are your obsession/s?

Hello, this will be my first time interacting with other autistic people so I’m looking forward to hearing from anyone.

I’d like to hear what obsessions and hobbies you may have. Bonus points for really niche ones, but anything goes.

Mine would be driving safety and theory. I have a special ability to judge my surroundings exceptionally well which makes me quite handy behind the wheel. I also have a copy of the Highway Code that I take everywhere, I don’t know what it is but I just find all that stuff intriguing and quite exciting. There’s a YouTube channel called Ashley Neal that I watch religiously, great if you want to improve your road safety and attitude towards driving.

Thanks for reading.

  • My other half used to love the tv show storm chasers

for me the weathers I love are snow storms and rain ease peice t rain with wind where you can see the rain it’s a sensory thing I think I love the patterns of the wind in the rain or snow

  • Mine is tornadoes. I find them really fascinating and watch a YouTube video every night. I think it started when I first watched Twister in school but had a fixation on weather before that anyway . It’s literally to the point where my best mate got me a storm glass for Christmas one year and a tornado water fixture the next year. Is that niche enough for bonus points?

  • I love watching dvla and Highway Code DVDs I must get soem again

i love the circus i have 4 cirque du solis DVDs 4 circus mondao dvd sets a Robert’s bros dvd a Netherlands circus dvd a paulos dvd set a planet cirucs dvd and my phone background is a pinders cirucs poster this obsession started nkt even a year ago after pinders came to town

i love classic cars but not even the fancy ones just like fiat pandas Triangulum acclaims and stuff like that

im a sensory seeker so naturally I am obsessed with tea and coffee and will litterly info dump about why a certain tea goes well with a certain mood or food or weather

  • Thank you! Another new doll came with the post yesterday. Congratulations on the new idea, I hope you have fun with your new story. I'm currently in a bit of a writer's block slump, waiting for my zest to return.

  • I love your dolls! I also write and just got an idea how to continue my new story!

  • Ok, so just to chuck another in the pot.  Did you know that recording and logging data is tons of fun?  Probably should have taken up train spotting.....

My hobbies and background are electronics and have quite a bit of test kit.  All of the kit I bought has features that can log the data so you can transfer it to a PC.

I bought a temperature sensor for my meter and wanted to try that out and the logging features, so popped them both in the 'hobby room' and left it for a whole day.  Got the data over to the PC and graphed it.  Managed to prove the room temperature goes down at night and back up in the day.  What a revelation!  I might pass the findings onto the New Scientist magazine for review Joy

Recently I've been doing a blood pressure diary as it's a bit high.  Checked 3 times a day and logged on a spreadsheet.  It's good ***.

Just bought a Garmin watch which is even more data (wife sighs) sleep scores, pulse, blood oxygen, stress level...... Sleeping

Must go as some nice young men in their clean white coats are knocking the door Joy

  • I think you're right - it's a question of extent and that red line is probably different for different people (and their partners!) Scream

For example, for me, ignoring family responsibilities would be a red line for me, indicating I probs need to let it go or back off a bit, but as I've been very much into self acceptance for some time, I'm going to say it's a quality and sometimes excellent skill with some risks that may need managing.

Part of it, for me, I think all them time.  Always have, all day every day and love to be 'fully engaged' in something.

  • Same here I remember writing epic tales at infant school, not sure if anyone could read them my handwriting was terrible

  • Wow that is strange, I love it. What would you say is your best find?

  • I love Formula 1 too. I’ve been watching since about 2008, but I was so young I can’t really remember much. Do you have any favourites in terms of drivers and/or teams that you’d like to share?

  • Not sure I agree.  I don't see anything wrong with being obsessive unless it starts to cause you or someone else problems.  Being obsessive can be quite the attribute and can drive you to achieve things others/you may not.

Without vomiting the whole story, I had 'some fun' with the BBC.  They had got it wrong and wouldn't budge.  It took some years to sort it out and get them to comply, but I stuck with it, researching the law and I just couldn't let it go.  It drove my poor old wife to distraction, although these days, if I decide to 'get stuck in' to something, I keep it more on the downlow so her head doesn't explode Joy

But to answer the original question, absolutely anything.  If it's interesting to me, I'll learn about it and research it, doing a deep dive and learning as much as I can from as many sources I can find.

A couple of years ago I had a hormone imbalance called gynecomastia , possibly caused by taking antipsychotics and dug in learning about hormones and sexual development  I found it all very interesting.

For me, I'm not interested in obtaining a certain level of achievement or understanding, I do it until I'm either satiated or exhausted and then move onto something else.  Yes, it's true, my poor old wife is long suffering!

    Keep smilin' Grin

  • Yes I am. I've been writing nearly daily since I was little, I've always been captivated by stories and have enjoyed writing my own for as long as I can remember.

  • Great thread. I have a number. Long term; Nine Inch Nails (band), since 1988. Longer term; psychology and psychoanalytic theory. To try and fill in the gaps I didn't intuitively pick up in childhood and in parallel made a career out of it. Music more generally, I have music/colour synesthesia so music is a stim.

Medium term: formula one and things mechanical, druidry and Cerridwen, dinosaurs, wood carving, glass paperweights, drumming (as in drumming circles rather than drum kit), doing an activity makes being social manageable. Walking and wild camping/bush craft.

  • Not sure I understand?

  • Yay! What a great topic! I have several, thanks to the ADHD. Ya got your short, mid, and long term.

Long term: anything related to animals, wildlife, and nature.

    Mid: Batman, DC comics.

Short term: Dinosaurs and prehistoric wildlife, various different space things.

  • Yes! Which fantasy?

  • Perhaps a stranger one, but I make a collection of foodstuffs that resemble real life objects Flushed eg a crisp that seems to replicate the highlands and maria of the moon. So uh, yeah!

  • Very interesting idea!

  • Yes, creating own world gives a lot of joy! As a kid I used to draw floor plans and each one had the exact address with the street name, postal code, number and the name of the owner. Owners were little dolls made of paper around 10cm tall. I have posted some photos of them in the creative thread.

I wouldn’t mind checking out that Legend of Zelda Tarot Deck, I’m a fan of that series, too.
