What is/are your obsession/s?

Hello, this will be my first time interacting with other autistic people so I’m looking forward to hearing from anyone.

I’d like to hear what obsessions and hobbies you may have. Bonus points for really niche ones, but anything goes.

Mine would be driving safety and theory. I have a special ability to judge my surroundings exceptionally well which makes me quite handy behind the wheel. I also have a copy of the Highway Code that I take everywhere, I don’t know what it is but I just find all that stuff intriguing and quite exciting. There’s a YouTube channel called Ashley Neal that I watch religiously, great if you want to improve your road safety and attitude towards driving.

Thanks for reading.

  • I think an obsession is a bit like an addiction, you can't stop thinking about it and it consumes your time, money and emotional bandwidth. Whereas a strong interest, is one where maybe you ask for xmas and birthday presents relating to you interest, but you can put it down and do other things.

  • Oooo another with a tarot obsession! I love tarot. My current deck is the Monsoon Tarot, which is a fantasy/mythological/anime inspired deck that vaguely mirrors the Rider-Waite. Do you have a favorite deck or a themed deck?

  • To a certain extent but I also like foraging for edible plants. My family grows and preserves large quantities of berries. I love growing my own food, and then storing it through the year

  • I think I can relate to how you feel about being a paramedic, in the sense that I like the idea of teaching people but being in a car with a driving student sounds out of my realm currently.

I do like some clear and solid rules, too. I’m more visual so I think that’s why the road signs and the like appeal to me.

I’m growing some veg at the moment, is that what you mean by edible plants?

  • Another safety obsessed person! I so rarely meet others!

I have a a special interest in First Aid. I would never have the social energy capacity to work in the emergency services or any medical role full time, but I train others in First Aid as well as getting trained myself and doing event cover. A lot of good first aid is working through algorithms and checklists and as that's often how I manage my communication anyway, I'm very good at it.

I'm a lover of risk assessments, and in following them and other safety related rules. It weirds out some of my peers and colleagues but I can usually blame it on the 'I see what happens when things go wrong' from the first aid but actually it was in place way before that. I'm a very rule oriented person, but pretty much only written rules. People on power trips going 'because I say so' with demands that don't match written policy don't gel well with me.

Other obsessions include orchids (e.g. profile pic) which have taken a back seat in recent years but can still get info dumped at the the slightest opportunity. Other hobbies are sewing, crochet, basically any thread based craft that's not knitting, and the outdoors/edible plants. And cooking. I cook a lot.

  • Your writing sounds interesting. Have you published any of your writing or is it a hobby just for your enjoyment? Slight smile

  • Well done, that’s a real cool obsession and safe too for you and other road users. I’m currently in the middle of learning to drive but haven’t taken to it so well. I think I’m too anxious.

    Anyway,
I have a lot of obsessions but my main one is dolls. I love collecting dolls (and playing with them!) and have a vast collection of them. Some I got when I was a child but most I’m buying now I am an adult and the money. I like to build them cute little scenes, like this kitchen scene

Sometimes I’ll take them out in the garden, if it’s dry.
I try not to do that though because otherwise I spend forever afterward trying to clean them with anti bacterial wipes…

My other special interest is writing. I like writing fantasy, fiction and historical stuff. I’m currently working on my own book and I have a few other mini projects on the go. Writing makes me happy, and I feel like I’m free in my own little world when I’m writing.

  • My big passion is writing epic fantasy books but on a break at the moment. It is all consuming when I start and I’m not in the right frame of mind just now. Other interests are pc games, ancient history and reading ..,

  • I am obsessed with writing and reading books. I could easily lose myself for hours. When I'm not doing that I can't think of anything else. It is my life along with being a mum. I also love Greek Mythology, playing video games - I love Sims 4 though intend to start stories and not play them for months, I love Cyberpunk 2077 and any games with a decent storyline. I watch videos on YouTube and I have an interest in spirituality, collect tarot and oracle cards which I sometimes use to compliment my novels.

  • Ok, honestly I recall quite several times when I was already tired of my very intense interest but some invisible power pushed me to do more

  • Thanks for the response. I have a few hundred hours in the sims 4, actually. I have the city expansion pack and whenever I think of an idea I will log in and play the idea out. My favourite one was when I completed the collectibles achievement, watching the displays and walls in the apartment slowly fill up with all the collectibles was super satisfying.

  • I think an obsession is something harmful, something that consumes you, I didn’t realise that when I made this thread.

  • I'm quite unusual in that I don't have any obssessions, but I do have some very strong interests

    Where does the distinction lie?

  • Nothing "niche" for me, my main hobbies are reading and playing video games.

However my current obsession is Sims 4 - I started a project last year to build lots of homes and buildings (such as restaurants & museums) and populate with Sims of my own creation. I have spent countless hours thinking of building designs and names for the sims. It's a bit like AlienOn3arth's projects where she builds doll houses and Lego villages, just that mine are digital.

I don't know if you are familiar with Sims 4, but if so I started a Sims 4 discussion thread which goes into more detail.

Your obsession is very interesting - never heard of that one before, but I understand how you could get into that stuff. We tend to aim to be experts at the things that interest us!

Hope you enjoy chatting with us.

  • Thanks for sharing, and I’m glad you got things under control and that you realised that your interest are not wrong. I think that all sounds great.

  • I'm quite unusual in that I don't have any obssessions, but I do have some very strong interests, such as medieval history, pre-history, spirituality and religious stuff, current and ancient. I also love reading, gardening and walking with my dog.

  • Hi, I like this thread. From me nothing niche or original - aliens, Erich von Daniken and his ancient alien theory which sounds logic to me. I also love creating, houses, dollhouses, building houses of lego duple, in the past there was sewing doll clothes and also trams. As a kid I used to draw tram line schemes with schedules in my own imagined cities and floor plans. I had a file full of them but unfortunately destroyed them all because I believed my hobbies were wrong - git laughed at because of them and literally told they are obsessions. Now I wpuld pay gold if a fairy gave them back to me. And one of my obsessions was also Russian to the point that ative Russian speakers didn't recognise im not one of them. My only friend laughed that I could be Putin's tutor. That obsession lasted around 10 years. Quite recently I was also morbidly obsessed with autism itself to the point of feeling sick of it. Decided that I have to stop it and done successfully. That was my therapist who gave me a homework to learn more about autism.
