What are your Yuck and Yum foods?

What are the foods that make you wince? How about the ones that you can always count on?

Wildly enough, I used to be pretty flexible as a kid because of ADHD, but since getting a proper stimulant, I've become picky as hell. This is a problem, since I am a rather serious runner, and should probably know more about nutrition than I do, but since I haven't shown any deficiencies yet, I'm gonna keep on the way I'm going.

Foods I cannot get within a meter of:

  • meatloaf
  • mac n cheese (truly a shame, I know)
  • milk
  • protein shakes
  • any gooey dessert

Go-to meals:

  • uncrustables (arguably 50% of my diet)
  • egg and sausage sandwiches
  • any steamed veggie, but mostly broccoli and cauliflower
  • chicken nuggets
  • fries
  • beans and rice

I'd love to hear yours.

  • Not very often I find it a real struggle and if I do I it’s the same place and the same dish….

  • I'm amazed at what people like and dislike.

How many of you go out to eat in cafe's and restaurants? I almost never do as between allergies and stuff I don't like and being veggie I'd have to go to 3 different restaurants to get a 3 course meal I could eat. Pretty much all my food is cooked at home.

  • Love:

    Fish

    Squid/cuttlefish

    Paella/Biriyani and similar rice dishes

    Most curries

    Irish stew

    Tagine

Pasta with tomato or cream sauces

    Kimchi

Pizza, but only thin crust with olives and anchovies - pineapple is an abomination, even if I didn't have a food intolerance to it

    Hate:

Anything dry served without a sauce

Steak (OK if has large amount of sauce)

    Burgers - not real food

Chicken nuggets - not real food

Any greasy food that has to be picked up - ribs, chicken wings etc. horrible sensory issues with greasy fingers.

Blancmange and all its ilk - texture problems

Any fat that has not been incinerated to a crisp - texture again

Carrots - taste and texture - bearable when raw.

  • Yum:
    - Ground Beef
    - Onions
    - Sardines
    - Blueberries
    - Cashews

    Yuck:
    - Cottage Cheese
    - Alcoholic Beverages
    - Sweets/Sugary Food
    - Hotdogs

On the whole, I tend to enjoy foods that are minimally processed and home cooked meals.

  • Me too although for some odd reason I can tolerate brown sauce although must be HP….not sure why?

  • Somebody else that hates sauce!!! I get such weird looks for it. Although I can't even manage it on pizza.

  • I’m fairly tolerant of different foods and drinks, but two things trigger my gag reflex: beer and quinoa!

  • I never go to burger bars since finding out their veggie option arn't really veggie at all, because they're cooked on the same grill as the meat ones, they even coat thier chips in meat powder.

  • Love

    Ice cream

    Cookies

    Carrots

    Jam

    Honey

    Tomato soup

    Hate

    Cabbage

    Cauliflower

    Sprouts

    Pretty much all vegetables ^^

    Chicken

    Mushroom

  • Hi

I am extremely picky and therefore a total nightmare for my family sometimes Sweat smile but there certain foods I can’t stand the sight and/or smell of and I definitely have my favourite go tos

    Hate Nauseated face:

All kinds of soup and curries (Sorry but they just look and smell like sick to me face vomiting)

    Any type of sauce

    Onions

    Love Yum

Pizza (Which i know technically has tomato sauce but as long as it's got a nice heavy coat of cheese I am absolutely fine)

Battered Chicken and Fish (It has to be Battered or I can’t touch it)

    White Bread sandwiches

Ice Cream (Yes, even in the winter)

  • Any mention of beetroot reminds me of the Kiwi Burger (New Zealand). It's even on the McDonalds menu over there. I like beetroot but I think in NZ was the only time I've had it since I was a kid.

  • Onions make me gag. Can't stand the texture. Really annoying as they are in so many things. If I miss one and it ends up in my mouth, I end up taking it out of my mouth no matter how nice the restaurant is.

I love strawberries, sweetcorn, and have a sweet tooth.

  • What are the foods that make you wince? How about the ones that you can always count on?

I found that after fending for myself for 3 years through university I was able to eat almost anything without being as fussy as I was when younger. Being broke and hungry can motivate you to be very flexible in what you will try.

A few things that seemed vile actually turned out to be really tasty - offal for example seems a horrendous concept but there are quite a lot of humble dishes here in Brazil that use things like the stomach of the cow that are incredubly tasty.

The texture is something I long ago learned to overcome as the flavour is so good - probably down to the spices it is cooked in.

When the same sort of dish is made in the UK (I think it is reffered to here as tripe) then my experience is that it is like slimy squares of wool cooked in walpaper paste. Spices never seem to come into the equation and the sauce is horrendous.

When I lived in the UK we used to host supper club events to make some spare cash - they are like dinner parties where people pay to attend and we made all Brazillian dishes which made people try things they would not normally consider and these were a great success.

A few people refused to try and a few were intolerant of some ingredients but on the whole it helped people reconsider the way they season their foods.

    • Noddles
    • Fish
    • Chips

  • That is so us. I am laughing myself silly.

  • I can't do melons or sweetcorn, but I love apsparagus

  • I forgot about Asparagus….can’t stand the smell, thinking of smell there is watermelon and sweetcorn…..

  • Yuk:  beetroot, mustard, broad/butter beans, asparagus, most boiled veg (except potatoes), most fish & shellfish (white fish in batter or creamy sauce is ok)

Yum: chocolate, most puddings, most cakes, chicken dippers with sweet chilli sauce, sweetcorn, baby potatoes, crispy base pizza with coleslaw or baked beans, Roast parsnips, Natural yogurt with a dollop of strawberry jam, ryvita sour cream & chive thins, spam & tomato sandwiches.

  • Oh and I also hate nuts and any kind of spice. The plainer the better in my world.
