Ruling the World

What would you do if you suddenly became empress/or of everything? Obviously we'd all stop wars, end world hunger etc etc, but what more personal things would you do?

I'd make us able to walk a mile in another persons shoes, so we'd get to know what it felt like to be NT and of course they would feel ours.

There are more personal things I'd like to be rid of like all members of the turnip family, BBQ's and people stating the bleeding obvious as though it's some sort of massive revelation.

I'd make shoe and clothing manufacturers make clothes and shoes in a wider range of sizes, shapes, colours and styles AND MOST IMPORTANTLY keep seeling jumpers althrough winter, and not just xmas jumpers, I want normal jumpers!

I'd make the internet work properly, like it used to, when you could search for something and actually get results matching your search criteria and not give you air fryers when you want wellingtons, stuff like that.

  • What would you do if you suddenly became empress/or of everything?

A Billy says, ban social media. It brings 10% joy and 90% misery.

I'd ban organised religion - faith / belief is fine but the organisations that feed off of it are almost entirely corrupt,

I'd ban career politicians - make serving in politics a form of national service.

Speaking of national service, I would make practical work experience mandatory for 14-18 year olds. Get them some skills that will be useful in the real world and get their noses out of their phones in the process.

Early exposure to the harsher requirements of the working life should stop so much snowflakery in the workplace when they finally join it.

I'm not saying to make their life misery but to make it clear that working isn't just about following your dream, doing good and being the star all the time. This stuff normally has to be earned through graft and sweat over time so unless you can identify your own route to this then know what you are getting yourself into.

Focussing on manufacturing skills, using your hands (with tools) to create stuff and how to make stuff sustainable should bring back the focus to local manufacturing eventually and may help reinvent the home grown manufacturing base that has almost dissapeared.

Bring in mandatory training for employers (especially the NHS) for all disabilities. This will include autism but should help with the detection and treatment for so many other issues as well.

Shifting the spending focus from overseas aid to domestic aid would be on my list. Sort out more of the issues at home before worrying about the many, many overseas problems.

This makes a good starting point.

    Good idea for a thread!

  • Yay! 2 people agree with me about banning disney!

    ***************

It would be good if we could get the materials to make our own clothes, haberdashry shops are almost a thing of the past, we still have one, but it focus's more on the craft side than the clothes making side. Buying nice fabric has become a nighmare, as with everything else it's all online, I think to judge whether a fabric is right for what you want to make you need to feel it, see it in different lights, does it drape in the way you need? The same with wool, that's got hard to find and expensive, it used to be that making clothes yourself was cheaper than going to a shop, but not now, it's more a premium product, which is great if you're already a good knitter or sewer, but not if you're just learning.

    *************************

I think more people are getting into growing their own food, waiting lists for allotments are huge in many places, many schools have outdoor class rooms where they learn about all sort of things, from growing their own food, to soil health, about wildlife and how important it is.

One of the things I'd like to see, is more people being taught how to cook and shop, you may think everybody can shop, but I think because so few people can cook properly, they get confused when an ingredient is out of stock, or another bug bear of mine, the ingredient they want has stopped being stocked, only to be replaced by kits. People need to know what alternatives there are. I think people need to know how to choose pots and pans too, some cheap ones you could burn water in they're of such poor quality, you need different pots and pans for different things too. Why when you buy a pack of pans is the big one not big enough to hold enough pasta, rice, potatoes etc for 4 people? You don't need masses of stuff, but you do need the right stuff.

    ****************************

I'd stop putting everyting online too, I want shops, real shops, that sell real things and not be told when I ask if they have the irem I want in a different size or colour to be told to look online.

  • Agree with this, the world would be a far better place.

I would teach people how to be self sufficient, back to a time when we knew how to make our own clothes and grow our own food and not be so dependent on the consumer system. I believe these skills should be taught in schools.

Just reminded me of my granny. She used to make all her own clothes, for herself and for my mum and her sisters. Every Xmas for years I received a handmade cardigan or hat and scarf from her. She made so much and it was always nice quality, and didn't affect my skin sensitivity too much.

I follow videos online to make my own clothes, I have a vintage sewing box full of so many materials and patterns.

  • I'd make us able to walk a mile in another persons shoes

That phrase. It always reminds me of the joke….before you criticise someone always walk a mile in their shoes. That way, if they don’t like what you say, you’re a mile away and you’ve got their shoes.

  • This is something that I do agree with - I’d also put an end to putting everything online, which is a huge problem for people in rural communities, many of which still don’t have proper low cost and high speed broadband connections especially the elderly, an especially important thing during Covid - given a real choice, most people would prefer to interact with a real person, not a computer or a machine, as we have been forced to become over-reliant on these, an especially sad and heartbreaking part of Covid - when Covid restrictions and mask mandates were lifted, I was delighted as I hated seeing everyone in masks even more so than wearing a mask myself - living in the U.K., I was desperate to get home to family in Ireland as soon as I could without restrictions or quarantine - during Covid, I was almost conditioned to living at home and living online and I hated it at age 54 now

  • I would get rid of social media. I think it has destroyed society

I would teach people how to be self sufficient, back to a time when we knew how to make our own clothes and grow our own food and not be so dependent on the consumer system. I believe these skills should be taught in schools.

I'd stop concreting over the countryside and preserve wildlife and our natural environment

  • Get robots to do the housework and do all the jobs so we can spend time on our interests and hobbies.

  • First, mandatory naps for everyone. Twice a day. Problem solved. Second, a global ban on reality TV. Seriously, the world would be a better place. And third, free unlimited ice cream for all. Because why not? Oh, and I'd totally get rid of those tiny, useless shampoo bottles in hotels. The rage is real.

  • And another thing, I'd ban disney for CRIMES AGAINST WINNIE THE POOH!
