Increase and decrease in stress in people with AS

have you noticed any patterns with health and stress tollerance?

thanks!

Emma

  • Depends on the health issue.

Pain related issues = definite increase in stress.

Depression = lowering in stress (depression blocks stimuli)

Colds etc. = usually lowers stress if you allow it. Of course some people just plough on regardless and get totally frazzled when they needed rest.

I do accept that "rest" is an awkward concept to explain to a young family or demanding boss. I would however recommend being ill when your ill.

  • When I am tired and feeling run-down, my stress levels increase massively. I cannot process negative thoughts so well, so they get out of control and take on a life of their own.

Stress causes me all sorts of aches and pains, all over my body, because of the constant tension. Exercise can relieve the aches, but when I am anxious exercise is  often the last thing I feel like doing.

  • Hello, my daughter has a problem with pain in her hand which I believe is caused by anxiety and then she suffers more stress because of the pain and being unable to use her hand. So yes, I believe she gets more stressed by being in pain.

  • thanks for the reply.

i think stress is more obvious for all when unwell, but I have noticed there is a huge leap that is far more exaggerated for my son who's 5. For several days before the physical symptoms of illness shows itself, I know something is brewing as his stress  levels increase and he seeks out comfort and his learned social skills take a dive. It's almost like he has to shut down and return to "command prompt" before he can function property again. If that makes sense. And I was wondering if it's similar or noticed by other mums and dads with AS kids, or other individuals with AS themselves.

And then of course coping with the illness is difficult, I have to reassure him that he will feel better and I am left wondering if his experience of illness and pain is more strong as someone with AS. I know its different for every individual but I'm interested in others experiences.

  • Ah, I see.  I believe it does.  When I am unwell I get stressed far more easily.

  • Absolutely, stress causes plenty of issues all of its own - I had an incredibly stressful year last year and my health is in recovery ( I hope!) now from that - so I know exactly what you mean. But my question was actually in reverse, not does stress cause you to feel unwell, but does being unwell cause your stress/stressful symptoms to worsen?

  • Yes, stress makes people ill, even if they don't have an ASC.  When I am stressed, I get all sorts of symptoms and it affects my executive functioning too.
