Hi. Does anyone here ever see characters in tv, movie or books and feel like they are probably autistic? I do this a lot. Just curious to know if anyone else does this. One character I always feel is autistic is Newt Scamander from Fantastic Beasts (Harry Potter). I see so much of myself in him, quiet/socially awkward, he has difficulty understanding and communicating with people, prefers animals to people, eccentric, loves his special interest, obsessive, notices the littlest things others often miss......and he's eccentric. I don't think he's written as autistic, I've never read he was, but I see so much autism in him. And I do with other characters as well.
Yup, but also fairly realistic that most people don't talk about their mental state
I actually assumed that was just an acknowledged fact, and only just now when I was checking found out it's not ever directly mentioned on the show (apparently having a main character who exhibits lots of standard autistic traits is fine, but if you actually say they're autistic it hurts the show's appeal to networks or audiences)
Surprised no one's mentioned both Temperance Brennan and Zack Addy from the series Bones, both are certainly meant to portray some form of neurodivergent thinking and approaches to socialisation.
Martin Goodman from Friday Night Dinner. Very likely Jim too.
Reginald Barclay from Star Trek TNG.
I only hope that our doesn't turn out exactly like that. Because he's still misunderstood and underappreciated.
Mater from Cars?
Dawson from Dawson's creek
Phoebe from friends
Sheldon from big bang theory
Bryn Nessa from Gavin and Stacey
Dwight and Michael from the US office
Heck, you could probably throw Nessa in there too.
I love Bryn. Great character and I saw autism in him as well.
Elsa from Frozen, Daria, Luna Lovegood and Katniss Everdeen. Related to them all super hard.
A real life character I read about a couple of days ago, Bjork.
Only played two hours of FFIX but honestly I can see this one. He has that outlook of every autistic little kid I've met and it's sooo sweet.
Forrest Gump without a doubt.
To go super nerdy, Vivi (and another spoilery group) in Final Fantasy IX feels that way. He's kinda awkward with people and has this incredibly earnest and a bit innocent view of things. It's a little hard to put into words, but anyone who's played it will hopefully see what I mean.
Lisa Simpson.
Bryn from Gavin and Stacey.
Yay! I haven't seen the character you're talking about but I love discussions like this. Debbie shared a thread which I've created, join and comment all your headcanons!
I see at least one autistic character in pretty much any book I read. Some examples are Hermione from Harry Potter and Moon, Cricket, and Blue from Wings of Fire.

All. The. Time! Especially books, though that might be more because that is my main access to fiction. I have a private theory that more authors are autistic than in the average population, and more readers as well, especially now that attention spans are getting shorter. Undiagnosed of course.
Showing my age, but a while back I re-read some of the early Famous Five books that I grew up on (I know they are problematic now, but nostalgia) and was shocked at how obviously autistic I found George and her father to be.
